Import says it worked, but it didn't.
-
I’m trying to import a posterous export. The status email says “Your WordPress import was successful.” But nothing happened. There are over a hundred posts in the export, and they’re not showing up.
It would be really helpful if the email said something more than just “it worked.” A count of the imported posts, a link to them, something.
-
Hi there – were you able to get this sorted out? I see posts and pages on this site now – https://gcanyon.wordpress.com – is this the site you were referring to?
If you still need any help, please let me know.
-
No, I wasn’t able to figure this out. The posts you see are not the ones I’m trying to import.
You are looking at the correct site.
-
Thanks for letting me know. I don’t see any pending imports on that site at the moment – would you mind trying the import again?
If it still doesn’t work, I’ll ask you to send me the import file for testing. Thanks.
-
You don’t see any pending imports because each time the import claims to complete successfully, as I said originally. I’ve run the import several times, and each time the result is: “Your WordPress import was successful.”
It doesn’t say what it did, though. It would be so helpful if it said something like:
Found 112 posts, they are now published.
or
Found 112 posts,
105 are now pending and you can publish them in the dashboard.
7 posts could not be imported, details are below.I’ll try again.

Thanks for keeping me posted. Would you mind giving me the URL of the Posterous site you’re importing from so I can do a few checks? Thanks.

gcanyon.posterous.com
Here’s the start of the XML file, with one post. I edited the file before attempting the import. The full sequence of events here (over the last several years) is:
1. I started at gcanyon.wordpress.com
2. I started gcanyon.posterous.com
3. I migrated the posts from gcanyon.wordpress.com to gcanyon.posterous.com (around 2010).
4. I exported from gcanyon.posterous.com
5. I removed the <item></item> entries from the file that matched the original wordpress posts. So the file should just contain the new posterous posts. It still validates at http://www.w3schools.com/xml/xml_validator.asp and the importer reports success, with no complaints.

Hi there – I’m going to send you an email so you can send me the import file you’re having trouble with. I’ll then do some tests at this end.
-
I received your file, thanks. I tested it at my end and the file did not import correctly, so there may be an issue with the file itself.
I’m going to have our developers take a look at the file and will keep you posted here. Would you let me know what program you used to edit it?
-
I’ve had a look at your file with one of our developers, and it looks like some pieces of the code that you edited manually are not being recognized by our Posterous parser – even though they may be valid XML – and that’s preventing our importer from working correctly.
Would it be possible for you to email me a copy of your original, unedited export file so we can take a look and do some more tests? Please reply to the email I sent – with the subject line intact – so I’ll be sure to receive it. Thanks.
