Import XML files from Xanga

Hello! I have recently downloaded 6 XML files from Xanga which I would like to import to my WordPress blog. However, I think only 3 XML files are imported successfully. I have received emails telling me that all the XML files have been imported but I doubt this because obviously many of my old blogs from Xanga cannot be seen in WordPress. Do anyone know the reason? Thanks!

Do you know which posts are specifically missing, and which file they were on?
They were either not included with the original export or the import failed coming in to WordPress.com. The only way to sort it out is by starting at the beginning.
Are you working on szewai2848t.wordpress.com or a different site?

I have uploaded 6 XML files (blogs within 2005 – 2012) and only the first 3 appear on wordpress. Not sure why the blogs earlier than Dec 2016 couldn’t be uploaded.. I have tried to download the XML files from Xanga again but it turns out the same – I have received emails saying import finished but nothing is refreshed.
When you said starting at the beginning, which stage I should start again? Because I have already re-downloaded the files from Xanga and tried uploading again.

Hi there,
Unfortunately this is a fairly common issue with Xanga imports.
Please try importing the files again, but this time use the WordPress importer. Try both the importer at WP-Admin ->Tools ->Import ->WordPress, and at My Site ->Import.
The importer is designed to not duplicate posts, so try re-importing all the files. Posts that finished importing earlier won’t be re-imported.

Hi kokkieh! Thanks for your suggestion! I have tried to use WordPress importer and I can further see my blogs during Oct-Dec 2006. However, the blogs earlier than Oct 2006 still can’t be shown… Is there any other way I can try? Thank you!

Out of curiosity, are you seeing error messages for any of the .xml files or do they all appear to import successfully?

I hit submit a little early, oops :) I was also going to ask if Xanga provide the option to export posts from a specific date range? If so, that could be worth trying.

Hi there, no problem! I didn’t see any error message from WordPress – I was simply uploading XML file, it just said processing. It appears that all the files seem to be uploaded successfully because I can receive emails saying the same.
And I don’t see any option from Xanga which asks me for a specific date range. There is only one download button and it would simply download a bunch of XML files of all my blogs – I could actually see my blog texts and the formatting texts when I simply open them in IE so that’s why I know my blogs are not all uploaded in WordPress.
Can you think of any other ways that I can try?

I think the best way forward is to try and isolate those posts, previous to Oct 2006 on to their own file and then process the import.
Have you asked Xanga if there’s any way they can help you get those posts on to their own file?
Otherwise, I’ll try and have a look at the export file for any differences in those posts. It won’t fix the import, but it might give us a clue.
