Import XML from self-hosted website – larger than 15MB

Hi, I’m trying to import the XML from my self-hosted website (which was on wordpress as well) to WordPress.com but there’s a 15MB limit on the size. My XML file is larger at 40+MB. How can I do this?

    Thank you.

  • Hi there,

In your self-hosted site’s dashboard there should be an option to export posts for only a few months at a time. This will result in several smaller export files that you will be able to import here.

The other option is to search online for an XML-splitter app which you can use to split the file into smaller sections.

Let me know if neither of these options work for you, or if you run into any trouble with the actual imports. Please keep in mind your self-hosted site will need to stay online at it’s current domain until the imports are complete – image files are only pulled in after the text content is imported, so make sure your images are actually in the media library on this end before you delete or disconnect anything on the self-hosted site’s end.

Thanks kokkieh.. I didn’t know that you could split the XML uploads. I exported the posts a few months at a time like you suggested and it worked. :)

  • Excellent! Thanks for letting me know :)
