Import xml to new wordpress installation
-
Hello,
I want to import all content from my current wordpress blog to a clean wordpress installation locally.
The problem I face is that on the new installation of wordpress when I try to install a plugin for the import I’m asked to provide an access to a hostname / ssh / ftp credentials.
So, I’m confused since the blog is hosted on wordpress.com and I don’t have this credentials.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks a lot
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey,
You can easily export all the content of your WordPress.com blog to a downloadable XML file, which you can import to your self-hosted WordPress install.
WordPress.com does not grant you FTP or SSH access, so using that plugin will not work. You will have to manually import the XML file that you earlier exported from WordPress.com blog.
Process to do so is mentioned in detail here:

thanks for your answer ehtis!
I exported the XML file from wordpress.com blog and then I went to the self-hosted wordpress install and on the import option
Tools→Import→WordPressI don’t have the option
“Choose your file, click Upload file and import, and select the option to Download & import file attachments and import your XML file.”
as indicated here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-to-a-self-hosted-wordpress-site/5/
Instead, I’m asked to give the FTP/SSH access. I know that wordpress.com doesn’t grant me with such an access, but I don’t know what to do :(
I can’t even install the plugin. I upload the zip file and as soon as I hit install now I’m back on the screen that requests FTP/SSH access.
It’s so weird.

That’s pretty strange. It could be that you have a plugin interfering with the import functionality.
The exact URL you should be visiting is:
http://ReplaceWithYourDomain.com/wp-admin/admin.php?import=wordpressIf it’s still not working, you will have to post in the WordPress.ORG support forum, which deals with self-hosted WordPress installs. It can be found at:
https://wordpress.org/support/ -
I appreciate your answer and I feel more relaxed that it’s not only me that I find it strange. This is getting even weird since it’s a clean installation and both the blog and the self-hosted use the same default theme.
I’ll follow your advice and ask for support at the wordpress.org/support.
Many thanks!
