IMPORTANT: 5 basic questions for setting up a blog – many thanks in advance! :)
-
Hey
I’m a newbie and I’m a bit lost setting up my new blog. I have a few questions and I hope someone can guide me into the right way, please-please-please.
(My blog is a movie blog and I’ll be reviewing every movie I see henceforth. Every review is also joined by a wallpaper-poster of that particular film.)
1) My right bar, mentioning the categories ‘Movies U’, ‘Movies E’ and so forth, takes up too much space so that I have to make the wallpapers of my movie reviews very small. How can I change the width of my right bar, please?
2) How do I create a categorie within a categorie? I would like the Main Categorie to be “MOVIES” and once you click on that – you see the subcategories ‘Movies A’, ‘Movies B’, ‘Movies C’ and so on (I wanna do this because later on, I’ll be having other categories such as “Videogames”, “Television Shows” and “Fun Stuff”) … how do I do that, please?
3) I would like a search bar. How do I implement that one, please?
4) I would like, on the top of my page, the text “Search by Title” + the entire alphabet (similar to this particular site: http://www.joblo.com/wallpapers_index.php?mode=movies) so that someone can actually see all my reviews starting, for example, with the letter G.
5) How can I write a review of, for example, the movie “The Eagle”, but ónly place it in categorie ‘Movies E’ so that it does NOT appear on the head of my blog (the head of my blog is only for the latest movies so that, on a weekly basis, it changes continuously).
Sorry for all the questions, but even with a lot of reading, I still cannot make head to toe. :)
Many, many, many thanks in advance.
Bye for now

Hi.
1) You can change the width only by purchasing the CSS upgrade and knowing the CSS language… or simply by choosing another theme with a narrow sidebar
2) This is how to manage categories. Sub-categories are accepted. A post in a sub-category will, by default, also be part of the parent category:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/3) Use the search bar widget:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/search-widget/4) To my knowledge, you can’t do that here. The best you can do is create a static page with the list of all the movies in alphabetical order, and 26 page jumps (A-Z) at the beginning. This is how to create page jumps:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/page-jumps/5) You can’t do that either. Your front page, by default, always displays the most recent posts, regardless of category. The best you can do is make your front page a static page:

Wow! Great how you’ve helped me! Thanks already!
One more thing though …
1) I want to write a new review but something has changed in the bar above that mentions all my options. You see – I clicked on “Add a new message” but I can no longer click on a specific color (to make a part of my text red) and everything appears in some sort of a code like and such – how do I get my normal text again (I would like to see the text actual in bold and not just the code that represents such action).
2) What is a tag and how do you do it, please? Is that like – if I’m writing a review on The Godfather, that you can click on Al Pacino (whom I mention in my review) and then you are thrown to another pago which deals with the actor? Is a tag sort of a bridge to more detailed information regarding a specific topic that you clicked on?
(another such example is: I’m talking about Johnny Depp’s latest movie and I say that he was brilliant in “Pirates of the Caribbean’ and I tag PotC and then you get to read the review of this movie). Many thanks, Sir. You’re a life-saver! lol :D
Bye for now
P.S.: If you should find out how to do this thing with the alphabet, please let me know. :)

Correction: at the end of question 1, I meant to ask the following:
Howcome I get a code like this < strong > in my body text when trying to write a new message – I didn’t actually mean to set things in bold. lol :D -
1) I guess you are referring to the visual editor vs. the HTML editor. Click on “Visual”. If that doesn’t work, there’s a troubleshooting guide here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/missing-visual-editor/2) This is a detailed description of how tags work:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/tags/Advice for next time: search the forums and the support docs. It’s a great way to learn how WordPress.COM and a quick way to find answers! :-)
