Imported spam: is there a way to manually launch Akismet?

  • Unknown's avatar

Today I imported the whole content from a long-running blog (2003), along with all its spam.
I deleted a lot of it manually, but is there a way to launch Akismet on the current set of comment in order to catch all the spam in one swift go?

    Thank you!

Please post the url for your wordpress. com blog. Where are you importing from?

The recommendation to all bloggers who wish to export blog contents and then import them into a wordpress.com blog is to delete all spam prior to creating an xml file. Akismet is used universally across the wordpress.com multiuser blogging platform. There is no way for individual bloggers to vary its use or to do as you suggest “manual launch for imported comments only”.

Akismet is the only spam filter on blogs hosted at wordpress.com. If you are hosted elsewhere, you need to be in the http://wordpress.org/support/ forums and you can start your search here !

    Thanks for your answers, guys.
The URL of the blog is http://monsieurennui.wordpress.com
    I imported it from the French, Six-Apart-owned, quasi-defunct and spam-ridden U-Blog: http://u-blog.net/ennui
I exported it into the MovableType format, and therefore used the MT importer.
I did remove a hell lot of spam manually from the text files (particularly turning one of the export files from 3.4 Mb to 304 kb), but lacked time to do this for all 4 export files, since I wanted the whole blog to be up by the end of the day, so that I could announce the new URL to U-blog visitors before they locked-up admin connexion at U-blog – which was due yesterday.

Hence, the posts&comments are all imported, but along with a hefty dose of spam still. That’s why I enquired about it. As I understand, I’ll have to flag spam by hand? It just that sifting through 185 of comments is a bit of a turn of, but hell, I get to it eventually…

Don’t worry, I know how WP and Akismet work: I translate wp.org and wp.com into French as a hobby :)

…which brings me to another point :)

    The whole…

…at the bottom of each comment, should be duplicated in the upper part of each comment. That way, if you have a lot of spam one after the other, you don’t have to move your mouse to get the “Spam” text link, it’s already there.

Just my 2 cents. Matt? :)

It sounds like the imported comments have been automatically approved rather than being held in moderation, which unfortunately does mean that you have no choice but to go through the list marking each one as spam. Which is time-consuming, but probably less so than manually deleting the spam from the MT export files.
