Imported XML file failed to upload

  • Unknown's avatar

I have recently been asked by my employer to delete blog [x], which I have now done. Before, before doing so, I created and XML export file, which I successfully uploaded to blog [y]. Unfortunately, however, the next stage of the importation process did not complete successfully (even after being left for over 6 hours). Therefore, now, I do not seem to be able to EITHER upload the XML file again (‘unexpected error’) OR resume the incomplete importation process.

As I ony have 7 days’ access to the XML file, I hope someone can help me quick.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

I don’t see any pending imports on your site at http://jamesdelingpile.wordpress.com/

What is the URL of the site where you’re trying to import the file?

    Hi kokkieh,

I don’t think it will show as pending because the import appeared to complete successfully at:
    https://wordpress.com/settings/import/jamesdelingpile.wordpress.com
It was the next stage that failed to complete (i.e. opening the xml file to recreate the old blog at the new address).

The same thing appears to have happened via the wp-admin/settings/import page of my new blog (where it asked me if I wanted to reassign authorship or my old posts to my new username) at:
    https://jamesdelingpile.wordpress.com/wp-admin/admin.php?import=wordpress

    Thanks, James D.

Is the problem the size of the xml file (i.e.>16 [sixteen] MB)?

I have now successfully repeated the upload of the 16MB xml file, and the webpage says the importation is ongoing (4 hours and counting). I have closed the tab, and logged back into the page using a different browser and, each time I come back to the page (on either browser), it still appears to be ongoing… This does seem to imply that the importation activity, entirely on the WordPress server, is genuinely still a work in progress. If so, just how many hours might it take? Presumably, if the activity is on the server, it will not matter if I need to re-boot my laptop in the meantime…?

  • Hi there,

It looks like the new import stalled, so I cancelled it on our end.

I think the problem is indeed the file size. We have a 15 MB limit on import files, and even then smaller files import much more easily than files close to the limit.

Do you still have access to the original site? Can you try exporting an incremental export instead by only exporting a few months worth of content at a time. Then import those files here one after the other.

Also go through your comments and clear out any spammy or low-quality comments. That’s the easiest way to bring down the size of your export file.

The other option is to look online for an xml splitter app that you can use to manually split the existing file into several smaller files. Then it should import here.

    Thanks, kokkieh.

I was (and am) very annoyed about having to delete my old site; especially because the WP website makes clear that this cannot be undone. Therefore, as I understand it, no-one, not even you guys have access to my old blog… Except for the fact that snapshots of it may be stored on many Internet servers…?

Meanwhile this XML splitter has worked. However, how long should I allow for each split xml file (i.e. all now <2.3MB) to import before assuming the process is still stalling?

Assuming this works, however, will subscribers to the old blog automatically be subscribed to the new blog? (What I would like to do here is be able to produce a new version of my blog that cannot be linked to my real name or the name of my old blog by anyone other than subscribers to the old blog.)

I think you can ignore the 1st question above (about import time), as I have now split the original into 10 files all <2MB, which the developer of the app says is the critical value. However, I would still appreciate an answer to my 2nd question (about subscribers).

  • I was (and am) very annoyed about having to delete my old site;

What do you mean you have to delete your old site? Is your old site also on WordPress.com? We automatically split up XML files that are too big for sites on WordPress.com, so I’m assuming your export file comes from a self-hosted WordPress site. Self-hosted sites are not on our servers and we have no access to or control over them.

how long should I allow for each split xml file (i.e. all now <2.3MB) to import before assuming the process is still stalling?

Usually files shouldn’t take more than a few hours to import, but it varies with the size of the file and the type of content that makes up most of the file. Comment-heavy posts can take longer to import, for example.

Assuming this works, however, will subscribers to the old blog automatically be subscribed to the new blog?

Subscribers are not moved automatically, but if the old site is a WordPress.com site and not deleted yet we can move the subscribers for you. For a self-hosted site we can only move subscribers who subscribed using the Jetpack plugin’s subscription module.

I will need the URL of the old site from which you want the subscribers moved, and if it’s in a different account I’ll also need the request to come from that username.

Note that you can also transfer an entire WordPress.com site between different usernames without needing to export/import anything. But that’s not possible from self-hosted WordPress to WordPress.com.

My old blog was just like the new one, both of which were set up on WordPress.com. Having split up the xml file for myself, because WP did not do it, I have now imported the whole thing successfully. I’m verey disappointed to hear that subcribers are not transferred automatically. I do not want to identify the old blog on a public forum like this, but, if you can still access it (even though, to repeat, I have had to delete it to keep my employer happy), can you please email me at my JD address…?

  • I’m afraid it’s not possible to transfer subscribers from a site that has already been deleted.
