Importing a blog resulting a problem
-
Hi,
I contact you because my wife recently died and I am willing to offer my kids the book of her cooking blog she used to have.
Her blog is the following one: http://bleu-combava.over-blog.com/My final idea would be to use blog2print website in order to print the blog in a book for me to offer.
I exported the blog via overblog export functionality (which appears to be one of yours) in order to get a xml file. I have the xml file but I’m not able to properly import it into your platform in order to migrate the blog.
I can’t attach any file in this email but I can provide the xml file in any other way.
Please do not the importance of the matter for me,

Hello,
Firstly, I am deeply sorry to hear about your loss. Your intention to create a book from your wife’s cooking blog as a keepsake for your children is a beautiful and thoughtful gesture. I’ll do my best to guide you through the process of importing your blog to WordPress.com.
- Checking the XML File: Ensure that your XML file is not too large for WordPress.com’s import limits. If it is, you might need to split the XML file into smaller parts.
- Importing to WordPress.com:
- Log in to your WordPress.com account and navigate to the dashboard of macuisinebleucombavasbackup.wordpress.com.
- Go to ‘Tools’ > ‘Import’.
- Choose the ‘WordPress’ importer. If it prompts for installation, please install it.
- Click ‘Choose File’ to select your XML file, then click ‘Upload file and import’.
- Post-Import Steps:
- During the import, you’ll be asked to assign authors to the posts. You can either select an existing user or create a new one.
- After the import, check to ensure all content (posts, pages, comments) has been transferred correctly.
- In Case of Issues: If you run into any problems like error messages or incomplete imports, the WordPress.com support team can assist. You can reach out to them with specific details of the issue. For transferring the XML file, they might provide a secure method if needed.
- Using Blog2Print: Once your blog is fully imported and set up on WordPress.com, you should be able to proceed with Blog2Print or any similar service to create your book. Make sure the blog is publicly accessible for the service to retrieve its content.
If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask. I’ll help as much as I can or direct you to the right resources.

Hi @anasmouaziz
Thank you so much for your help !!! my XML file is 11.9MB, what is the limit for this type of file for the import ? Also, how can I split the file into several pieces ?Thank you very much for your appreciated support on this topic
-
You’re welcome! The maximum file size for XML imports on WordPress.com varies based on the hosting plan you have. For most plans, the limit is typically around 15MB. Since your XML file is 11.9MB, it should be within the allowable range for import without needing to split it.
However, if you do encounter an issue with the file size or just want to be prepared, here’s how you can split your XML file into smaller pieces:
- Manual Splitting:
- XML files can be manually split using a text editor. However, this requires some understanding of the XML structure to ensure you don’t break the continuity of the data.
- You would essentially be creating multiple XML files, each containing a portion of the original file’s data (like posts, pages, comments, etc.).
- Using a Tool:
- There are tools available that can automate the splitting of large XML files. These tools ensure that the XML structure is maintained properly in each split file.
- A simple online search for “XML file splitter” should provide a variety of tools. Always ensure you use a reliable and secure tool, especially when handling sensitive data.
- Splitting by Post Type or Date Range:
- If your XML file is from a WordPress site, you might have the option to export content by post type or date range, effectively creating smaller files.
- This can be done from the WordPress dashboard of the site you’re exporting from, under ‘Tools’ > ‘Export’.
- Testing the Import:
- After splitting the file, it’s a good idea to test the import with one of the smaller files first to ensure everything is working as expected.
If you decide to split the file and need guidance on the manual process, or if you encounter any issues during the import, feel free to reach out for more detailed instructions.

I’m importing from Blogger option since it is the xml option.
The message I get is:Sorry, we're unable to process the Blogger file.
Make sure you are using a valid WordPress export file in XML or ZIP format -
@baptmic31, I want to express my deepest condolences for your loss. Please know that we are here to assist you during this challenging time.
After some research, it appears that the “Blogger” import is not the right choice for importing Over-Blog, as it is designed for sites hosted on Blogger (Blogspot). Given that Over-Blog is a different platform, you should choose a different importer.
While we don’t have a specific Over-Blog importer, since you have an XML file, could you try the WordPress importer? WordPress imports expect an XML file, so that may work for your particular case. You can find guidance on how to do this here: https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-a-sites-content/
Please let us know how this goes. If you encounter any difficulties, we can also look into your uploaded XML file and explore alternative solutions. Thank you for your understanding, and feel free to reach out if you need further assistance.

Make sure you are using a valid WordPress export file in XML or ZIP formatI’m not sure to understand how I’m able to change the WXR version of my XML file… Is there any possibility for me to send you the file I’m trying to upload for you to help me with it ..?
Thank you very much,

Hey there,
Many thanks for reaching back out!
Are you able to obtain the XML file as per these steps here: https://support.google.com/blogger/answer/41387?hl=en > “Back up your blog content”
This file type or zip folder is what’s needed here, and this should import.
Many thanks in advance and looking forward to hearing from you.
