Importing an existing Blogger FTP blog

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi – I am looking to import my blogger blog which an FTP one hosted on my own site.
It looks like I have two options
    1. To set up a basic wordpress hosted site that I can redirect my existing URL to
    2. Set up my own FTP again at a cost of $10 a year I think

In terms of importing the existing blog it says under TOOLS in my dashboard there is an IMPORT button but there are no options uder tools in my dashboard at all. I see the tools button/link but it has no options under it – and I doing something wrong?

Any one got experience of importing as I am tryign to or is there a migration guide at all – don’t seem to be able to find one myself
    thanks
    Mike

There are two separate and distinctly different wordpress choices. Here at wordpress.com we do not have FTP access to our blogs and we only provide support for those who do have free blogs being free hosted by wordpress.com.

Please read the differences so you are clear about them and make the correct choice for you and the blogging you intend to do based on full and factual information http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Yes I read that – it looks like the wp.com option might work for me but I don’t get the IMPORT option in my dashboard – the only thing listed there under TOOLS is Gears Status and Post by Email – nothing on IMPORT – which the instructions say is made easy by the improt option in TOOLS. It ain’t there ;-)
    Any ideas?
    thanks

This is the error message I get when I click your wordpress.com username link to this blog http://effingpot.wordpress.com/
    HTTP 410 – Gone
    This page is permanently gone.

Please post the complete and clickable URL for the blog you are referring to so we can figure out what’s going on.

Hi. That’s not the blog I’m talking about – that was an old one I deleted. I want to start afresh by importing a blog from Blogger. Do I need to create an empty blog first THEN import to it maybe? I’ll take a look but it did not look that way from the instructions.

I want to start afresh by importing a blog from Blogger.

You cannot import the whole blogspot blog tmeplate and all. You can only export and import your blog content, minus all images and all sidebar contents and blogroll. There are instructions for exporting a Blogger (blogspot) blog contents out minus the images, which cannot be exported available online. if you do not delete the Blogger blog you will be hotlinking to the images in the posts at the blogspot site.

If you do not make the visibility of the blogspot blog “private” then search engines will detect duplicate content and you will be opening yourself to duplicate content penalties.

Once you have exported that file out of the blogspot then you will need to have either a wordpress.com free hosted blog to import the file into, or you will have to hire a webhost and download free software from wordpress.org and import the file into it.

If you intend to have a wordpress.com blog with the domain you have then this information and these instructions are important so read them carefully > http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

So we have come full circle as in the OP you stated:

In terms of importing the existing blog it says under TOOLS in my dashboard there is an IMPORT button but there are no options uder tools in my dashboard at all. I see the tools button/link but it has no options under it – and I doing something wrong?

What is the URL for the blog to which you are referring? Is it a wordpress.com free hosted blog or is it a wordpress.com self hosting install?

OK you’re losing me – I don’t have a blogspot blog. As per my 1st sentence I use blogger to create and FTP blog (www.friday-fun;com/blog).
I host it on my my own site (well I did till today as google no longer provide support for FTP blogs).
So I want to move it somewhere else.
I thought WP provided some facility to manage FTP blogs where the files are stored on your own server. Maybe not.
I see the WP.org stuff but this seems to be different – in that it needs you to install everything (the WP software) on your own host – which I don’t particulalry want to do.
I wanted to import my blogger blog to something else that offered the same function and was told this was here.
Though I now think this is not the case.
This is a shame as the FTP suppotr from Blogger was excellent – you use their site to upload posts and it just bungs them on yoru own hosted space. tis a simple concept that I can’t find offered anywhere else.

WordPress.com does not provide FTP access. Depending on the host you choose, WP.org may.
