Importing Blog From Another Site

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to import a sideblog from Tumblr onto WordPress. I have been at it for over an hour, when that sideblog has only 4 posts to its name, no drafts, and there is no results at all – the pages imported is still reporting 0.

Can you help me please? I doubt it should take this long.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

How do you stop an import to restart it again, or to do a different blog?

Please be gentle, I don’t know much about technology and it always frustrates me immensely.

  • Hi there,

I’ve double checked to confirm your import is still queued. It didn’t cancel. But please do reconnect to your Tumblr account if you’ve disconnected it, as that could be preventing it from starting.

We’re processing quite a few imports from Tumblr at the moment, which is causing a backlog of imports in our system. While it may look like your import failed, it’s just in line for processing, and luckily it’s still in the queue. Please give it another 24 hours, and if it hasn’t completed by then, update us here.

I’m still connected to tumblr and it still says “in progress” with nothing to show for it.

As it’s getting close to 24 hours being up, I sure hope I’m closer in the queue to the end than I was before. I have no idea really. There’s only 6 more hours to go and nothing has apparently changed on the surface over here. I’m rather discouraged and disappointed right now. I hope something changes soon.

Thank you for getting back to me though! I really appreciate the reply!!

  • I sure hope I’m closer in the queue to the end than I was before. I have no idea really.

I hope so too. Unfortunately I have no idea either :)

I can tell you the importer is processing thousands of posts a minute, so it is running. But the queue is pretty long so it might still be a while.

About an hour to go and still no progress. I hope the queue will be able to deal with me soon. :(

  • @indigodragon94 For what it’s worth, you are closer :) We do process the imports in order. It’s just that there are *lots* of imports and some of them are pretty large.

I can see yours is still waiting to start, so, please give it more time.

Also, you’re free to close the window and just check in again on it tomorrow.

It’s been well over 24 hours by now. :(

In 6 more hours it would have been two full days with no results.

I guess I made a mistake choosing a small sideblog to import to test things, if it’s going to take THIS long for each separate import.

I’m worried about the purge on tumblr that has been flagging different random posts and even outright deleting entire blogs. I’m worried something like that might happen to mine, just from the randomness of the bot they have unleashed onto us.

I really wish I had chosen to import one of my biggest sideblogs instead, or even my main blog.

I don’t know at this point if I’m going to have them all (5) blogs – main and sideblogs – imported before the December 17th deadline. I’m scared… I know realistically I have plenty of days until then, but my mind is scared anyways.

  • @indigodragon94 we’re doing what we can, but even while processing thousands of posts per minute, there’s a big backlog. Yours is *still* working on start, unfortunately. Resetting at this point could be unwise, as you’ll lose your place in the queue.

You’re welcome to create extra sites here for your side blogs and import those separately, though…. I believe that should work. And while we can’t estimate anymore when they’ll be done, I can say we’ll get them as soon as we can.

A few considerations we’re noticing now after a few days:
    – We can’t give ETAs (again due to the sheer number of imports we have queued right now)
    – If you have more than 3GB of images, you’ll want to upgrade before importing so we can get all of the images in place
    – As long as you keep connected, it should eventually start.

We’re monitoring the situation, so please keep an eye on this post:

Thank you for getting back to me! I finally finished my test import and I’m starting on a new one. Hopefully it goes faster than three days, but it was one of the ones I was most worried about (despite being sfw, since I have a lot of precious information on there that I rarely shared anywhere else.)

Thank you for staying with me during those three days! Even if I was quite frustrated by the slow import (due to understandable reasons, yes, but still frustrating) I never once felt ignored or slighted by any of you. Rather I felt heard and appreciated and very much welcomed by the warmth and prompt consideration from your team. Thank you again for proving in light of Tumblr’s massive failure, that there are indeed competent and welcoming moderators remaining on this internet. :) <3

    Thank you so much!

  • Hi there,

I hope the new import goes faster as well, but I’m afraid we cannot make any promises – the queue is still pretty long, but we do appear to be slowly catching up. I’ve confirmed your new import is in the queue, so it will start once the importer gets to it. Just sit tight :)

I’m trying to finish importing my big main blog, but it’s stuck at 7,952 (out of 66076, yeah I know it’s big eheh;; ) … I check my emails and I got this one:

    Howdy,

You have used up all of your available upload space. This means we can not import any more attachments.

You can purchase a space upgrade here: http://indiflyingwithdragons.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php

Does that mean I ran out of space for my blog to all be imported or something…?? I’m sorry that I might be missing something obvious here but I’m not familiar with how technology works a lot. :(

By the way, my test sideblog imported well, along with the sideblog I was really worried about, and each took like four days to complete. I’m worried about my main blog right now to be honest. :( It’s almost a full 24 hours with no response!

  • Unknown's avatar

I imported my test sideblog successfully, along with the sideblog I was worried about. Each took around 4 days to get through the queue.

Now I’m worried about my main blog and it’s been around 24 hours that its been stuck on that number of posts imported.

So that’s why I thought to bring it up. :(

Sorry for the repost! I didn’t think the second one got through… ^///^

    Hi indigodragon94,

Does that mean I ran out of space for my blog to all be imported or something…??

This is referring to the 3GB storage space in the Free plan — posts and pages don’t count towards this allowance though, only media. You’ll need a paid plan in order to import more than 3GB of media but posts and pages will continue to import.

If you wanted to upgrade and run another import, only the missing content would be imported (existing content wouldn’t be duplicated).

Now I’m worried about my main blog and it’s been around 24 hours that its been stuck on that number of posts imported.

It appears the Tumblr import on indiflyingwithdragons.wordpress.com has now failed, so I’ve reset the importer ready for you to try again. We are still processing Tumblr imports so I’m unable to say how long this will take. Please keep your Tumblr account connected as disconnecting it could prevent the import from starting.
