Importing Blog from Hosted WordPress

    Hi WordPress,

I’m currently trying to transfer my blog back to it’s original, free WordPress blog after coming to decision to not host mine any longer. However, the importing is taking long. How long can I expect to have my blog import? I am on my second try uploading after having had my computer off and was worried the process stopped. I’ve checked my blog and it doesn’t seem like anything is importing. The hosting company I was with said to contact you guys as it isn’t something they deal with. My computer has been running for over 2 hours now and it’s still importing.

    Thank you!

What is the size of the XML file, please?
Is the site you have the XML export file from still online?
If yes, what is the URL?

Sometimes the importer gets stuck. If the file is large you may have to import Posts, Pages, etc. in separate files. Or if the file is very large Staff may have to do the import.

The size is 13.5 MB – I’m hosted on WordPress.org through Creative Whim. I’m not very tech savvy, so I’m not sure what URL you’re needing.

I was asking for the URL of the wordpress.ORG site.

Thanks and no problem. All you need now is patience while waiting for Staff help.

    You’re welcome. :)

  • Hi there,

I’ve reset the importer for you, but the problem could be the file size. While 13.5MB is under our file size limits, in some cases a file that size can cause problems, and smaller import files are always better.

So before you try importing again, please do the following:

    1) Make sure, if you have a high number of comments, to delete all spam comments, and any other comments that you feel don’t actually contribute to the discussion. Weeding out spammy and irrelevant comments can drastically impact the file size and the importer also isn’t great at handling thousands of comments on only a handful of posts. Make sure to check any pending comments as well, and empty the spam queue. Then create a new export file.

    2) Try to split up your export file into smaller pieces. You can do this by exporting your posts in several files covering a few months at a time. There are also software you can use to split the file after you download it, but the WordPress.org forums is a better place to ask about that as those users have more experience with this kind of thing.

If you try importing again and the importer stalls (wait around 24 hours to be sure), let me know and I’d be happy to take another look.
