Importing blog xml file from squarespace

    The site won’t import my blog data from my old squarespace blog. It says it was successful but nothing appears. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Does this help?

    Hi there – did you already export an XML file following the Squarespace instructions here?

    http://help.squarespace.com/customer/portal/articles/724556-can-i-export-my-site-

    Once you’ve done the export, on your WordPress site, under Tools > Import, try importing your Squarespace XML file using the Moveable Type/Typepad option. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/squarespacecom?replies=13#post-1277363

    I’ve done exactly that and I get the email confirmation but nothing shows up, I tried it a few times. Not sure what to try now.

  • Hi Jay, I had a look at three of the various export files you tried to import and it looks like none of them is quite the right format.

    The file that Squarespace generates should have this at the very top:

    <?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”UTF-8″?>
    <rss xmlns:excerpt=”http://wordpress.org/export/1.2/excerpt/” xmlns:content=”http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/” xmlns:wfw=”http://wellformedweb.org/CommentAPI/” xmlns:dc=”http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/” xmlns:wp=”http://wordpress.org/export/1.2/”>

    That lets our importer know how to bring in the data correctly.

    Could you please try exporting your file again, being sure to select the WordPress option at Squarespace. I’m going to send you an email so you can send me the file directly so I can take a look. Thanks!

    Unfortunately I no longer have access to the original blog. Is there any way for me to edit one of the existing documents so that it works?

  • Ah, that’s too bad. Could you please send me the files you already tried importing so I can take another look?

  • I have some possibly good news. Although there were no WordPress-formatted export files among those you sent, I was able to successfully run an import on a test site, using one of the files with the Moveable Type/Typepad import option. 308 posts were imported. The file needed to be renamed like this to give it an XML extension:

    devdiary.devdiary.06.06.2012.export.xml

    Your Squarespace site had three users, so if you want to map each of them to a new user in WordPress.com, you’ll first need to add or invite those users to your site. Otherwise, you can map all posts to the existing kamui079 user.

    Let me know if you’d like to go ahead and try this on your end. I would also be glad to do it for you if you let me know how you’d like the users mapped.

  • Also just a heads-up that no images were imported since your Squarespace site is not accessible.

    Thanks so much for the help, if you don’t mind, you can just map the users to the kamui079 one.

  • Your import is complete! Please have a look and let me know if it looks OK. Unfortunately, as I mentioned, we were not able to retrieve any images since the original site is no longer live.

    Looks good, I just wanted to back up the writing more than anything. Thanks so much for your help, you’re the best!
