Importing Content

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to import all of my content from my wordpress.org website (www.kaylashowndean.com) to my wordpress.com site (kideanaround.wordpress.com). I have been on the phone with my server BlueHost, who has walked me through the process twice. We have been able to successfully export my content from my wordpress.org site in XML format. However, when we go to import the file to my wordpress.com site, we keep getting the following error message:

    Import WordPress
    Using LIBXML_COMPACT Using LIBXML_PARSEHUGE
Sorry, there has been an error.
This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR version number.

Could you please get someone to assist me personally with this?

  • Hi there,

How exactly did you export from Bluehost? The only place to get the file you need to import here is from Tools ->Export in your WP-Admin dashboard. If you’re downloading anything from your cPanel it’s not the correct file.

Unless you’ve changed your site’s dashboard URL, the place to get that file is here:

    http://www.kaylashowndean.com/wp-admin/export.php

Also, how big is the file you’ve exported? If it’s more than 15MB, please try splitting it up into several smaller files as explained here:

    Kokkieh,

I did not export from BlueHost; I simply asked them to walk me through the process, which they did.

I did export from wordpress.org site as I mentioned. The problem may be the file’s size, as you indicated. It is over 80MB. I read the article that you linked about splitting the file, but the articles link is broken to download the WXR file splitter. Any ideas?

  • Okay, an 80MB file would definitely be the problem. How many posts do you have on your site?

If you have a very high ratio of comments to posts, please go through your comments and weed out any that are spammy or very low quality. Comments like that can both inflate the size of the export file and cause the importer to stall for other reasons.

It looks like you’ll still be able to download the WXR splitter here:

Okay. So I downloaded the WXR splitter and I was able to create about 45 smaller files to import. Then I imported ONE of them. It seems to have worked. It went into 24 hour processing.

Does this mean I have to wait 24 hours to import EACH of the 45 smaller files?

If so, I am looking at more than a month of importing EVERY DAY.

    That is a bit excessive.

  • None of them should take 24 hours, no. That 24 hours message just says to contact us if after 24 hours you haven’t received a notification yet that the import is complete. But I see the first import is already done, so you should be able to import the second file now.

Depending on the size of the files, it shouldn’t really take more than a couple of hours for any one to import, but it varies. If you notice one is taking exceptionally long to import, let me know and I can make sure it didn’t get stuck.

    Thanks, Kokkieh.

I was able to use the WXR splitter to create 45 smaller files to import (though it took me some time). I have also “successfully imported” all 45 of them, according to the email notifications I have received. Yet, I am still missing A LOT of content.

When I go to my “Media” viewer, I can see that several of the XML files were just imported into that as XML files. I am unable to see any content for these files other than their presence in my Media folder. It’s really kind of confusing and troubling. Any ideas?

  • @kaylashowndean

Are you the same person as @kayladean who started this thread? You are not a user on the site indicated in the first post, http://kidean.wordpress.com/, so you wont’ be able to import to that site, nor do I see any recent imports on that site.

When I go to my “Media” viewer, I can see that several of the XML files were just imported into that as XML files.

That’s not possible, as .xml files cannot be uploaded to the media library on WordPress.com. On what site is this?

Are you missing actual posts and pages, or are you missing image files that were not imported? If the latter, can you also provide a link to a specific post referencing missing images?

Yes, kaylashowndean and kayladean are one and the same. I must have just logged in to the wrong account when I posted.

I have a screen shot of it if I had a way to attach it for you. I could show you how I see the xml file in my media as simply an xml file.

This is on the site kaylashowndean.wordpress.com

  • I went through the entire media library of that site and there is no .xml file there, only .jpg, .png and a few .pdf files.

And you haven’t answered me regarding exactly what content you’re missing. All I can suggest, though, is to try running the imports again, or to get a new export from your old site.

How many posts and comments do you have on the original site? I see about 400 posts and 800 comments on the WordPress.com site. There is no way that amount of content could lead to a 80MB export file.
