Importing from b2evolution
-
I have a blog that’s been running since 2003 and is now on b2evolution. I’m considering moving this to a WordPress blog, hosted there, and I’d like to import my content. I’m running the b2evolution system myself, so I can do what I want, but all the posts I’ve found about this migration seem to assume that I’ll also be running WordPress myself, which I’m not.
It seems the solution could be to generate an export file that’s compatible with one of the formats supported by the import plugins (I’ve created a test blog and I can see those), but then I’ve clicked an item as a test and there’s a 15MB limit for file size – I don’t know for sure yet, but I assume this won’t be enough for my content.
Suggestions? Is this the right place to ask? I haven’t done it yet, but I would go for a Premium plan when I’m convinced it will work out – can somebody help me in other ways if I do this?
Thanks

Hi, Oli.
If you can create a compatible export, and file size is the only issue, you could break it into smaller files and import them one at a time.
There are lots of utilities around to break up XML files, for instance. A quick Google search will give you lots of options. It’s also possible to do it manually in a text editor if you’re familiar with standards and syntax.
I hope this helps.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. However, I’m not sure whether this approach would logically work. The XML file would obviously contain data of various types, with items referencing other items. Splitting the file wouldn’t work unless the content happens to be ordered in a way so that all data could be inserted sequentially without reference issues.
I’m in the process of creating a file in one of the supported formats, and once I get that done, I’ll look at the structure to see what’s what. The database backup I’m starting from is 170MB though, so I expect the export file to be quite large, too.
Why is there a 15MB limit on the import to a wordpress.com blog? Seems like a rather useless restriction to me.
Thanks

I’m not sure of the reason for the restriction.
It sounds like this may be a pretty complicated import.
If you’d like staff help with the issue (rather than the community volunteers here on the forums) you can either tag this thread with “modlook” (over in the right sidebar) or contact support using the form on this page.

Thanks for the hints! I think the page you linked is basically where I entered the info in the first place, and it ended up being posted here. But I’ll give everybody some time to react before I do anything else.
Thanks

A quick update for others in the same situation. I came up with a solution – not too hard in the end, since I remembered I had a local WordPress installation hanging around that I created on my laptop for testing purposes. I duplicated my b2evolution database on my local system’s mysql server. Then I got hold of a license for the BIMP importer script and used it to import content into the local WordPress.
(Oh one step in between – I found that the vast size of my database was mainly due to a few hundred thousand unpublished spam comments and trackbacks hanging around in the database. I dropped those from the tables manually before running the BIMP import.)
Using the WordPress export function, I created a file that was within the 15MB limit and restored this on the wordpress.com blog. I had to get some help from the support department to correctly update a number of posts that were using Markdown syntax. Now I still have to make one step: get my images onto the wordpress.com blog and restore the links…
Thanks for your help!
