Importing from Blogware

I need to import the old Committee to Protect Bloggers site from the constantly interrupted Blogware format (civiblog.org) to WordPress, to assure the information we’ve gathered and the resources are available to bloggers and others. The instructions on WordPress.com are behind a link that no longer works. http://codex.wordpress.org/Importing_Content. Chris P. has a plugin here: http://chris.pirillo.com/2006/05/16/blogware-export-wordpress-import/.

The problem is, there are no instructions and I’m still not particularly competent technically. So, is this plugin the way to go? If so, how do I use it? I mean, what exactly do I do with this thing?

If you read the FAQ, you know that adding plugins (as well as themes) are disabled on WordPress.com. To import, go to Mange > Import and select the service for importing. Unfortunately, currently only importing from TypePad, Blogger, LiveJournal and WordPress blogs are possible.

Maybe if you suggest in Feedback they might add it.

Send me the file and I can give it a try to convert it to WordPress XML.

Can’t promise anything but I’ll give it a shot. I do note though that the links won’t come over. If you can save them into a OPML format, you can import that here I believe.

Pictures either. Those you’re going to have to reupload and relink.

Got 16 emails asking for help on 16 different topics. *sigh*

You’re a treasure to be sure but perhaps we should be tossing some doubloons into your treasure chest, eh? Time is money. ;)

*grumble* Don’t get me started about money.

Looks like the import from Blogware feature still isn’t available and plugins are still disallowed. Any ideas on how to generate WordPress XML without bothering the helpful but time/money limited drmike, or installing a local version of WordPress just to run the plugin? Thanks.

Plugins are never allowed at WordPress.com; that’s not the way it works here. If your blog is hosted anywhere other than WordPress.com, you need to be asking at WordPress.org, in accordance with the sticky thread at the top of the forums marked Read Me First.

You can always subscribe to the RSS feed for the old blog and use that to feed the new blog. Time-consuming and fiddly, but it works.

I realize that Workpress.com doesn’t allow plugins; that’s why I’m asking if there are any good ways to import from Blogware to WordPress.com with this limitation. The previous member (babbler) seemed to received an offer of support from drmike. I’m asking if there is another way to do this.

Dr Mike is pretty much retired. Like I suggested, the only other way I can think of to do this is via the RSS feed. It’s been done before several times. This is presuming the Blogware software has an RSS feed.

What you may want to do though is visit one of the other WordPress Multiuser installs and check to see if they offer the Blogware importer. If so, you can import it there and export out a wp.com usable file. The importer is actually built into the software. For some reason, it’s just not included here.
