Importing from older WP version – have sql or csv file
-
Hello,
I just signed up for a blog here at wordpress.com and would like import postings and comments from my old 1.5 wp blog. The problem is that all I have are sql and csv files. There was no export function in my old blog.
Is there a way to import my data directly, or at least by converting the files I have into something that works? If so, do you have any hints on how to convert?
Thanks,
Sonja
P:S.
My old blog does not exist anymore, so I have no chance to extract the data once more in a different format. -
If the sql file can be zipped and is then less than 10mb in size, send a support in and I’ll do it.
If it’s larger than 10mb then I can’t promise but still get in touch.Note: That’s an old version. You MUST keep a copy of the file you may send to me. Don’t rely on me keeping the file – I delete ruthlessly on my machine :)

Mark I am Zuul :)
I’ve been experiencing the same issue, trying to export from my WP.ORG to import into my WP.COM blog. My export only gives out a portion of the posts. It seems, because I cant go down them all, there are over a thousand, that it kicks in until November 2006 and after that the big zip. But I did make a SQL backup that once unzipped is about 3.5 MB compared to the 1.4MB exports, something is definitely missing.
Can you you help a guy out? No matter how many mods I make to my INI files to allow bigger files, nothing. I changed to default theme, thinking K2 was messing with me, disabled all my plugins, thinking it was the plugins, nothing. What can else can I do?
How do I “send a support in” to get my file to you?
-
Support is closed for the weekend, except for urgent issues. On Monday you can contact staff by using the “support” link on this page http://wordpress.com/contact-support/
-
To get your export correct you need to ask at http://wordpress.org/support
There could be a variety of reasons why it’s failing but it’s impractical to help before you have the zip.The export must also be core files only. No stats, no tags, no anti-spam stuff.
-
Excellent!
I’ll wait for Monday.
Is there a way to remove all the tagging that was implemented by a plugin? Parsing it manually will be more work than I could possibly handle. At least I think.
Any help appreciated. Thanks again.

I’m thinking it may be best if you follow Mark’s instructions and post your questions over at http://wordpress.org/support

I hear you and I emphasize but that’s the way it is. It seems in a non-commercial blogging environment like wp-com that there are more bloggers willing to volunteer their time to answering questions on forums than there are in monetized blogging environments.

If I do some begging will someone here help me? Even after bumping my post, it’s 3 pages down and I’ve gotten no replies as many other posts have gotten none either and I have found NO other posts relating to my issue directly. Can anyone help me with my SQL file?
I did as Barry suggested with my PHP.INI file which is up the max_execution_time and the memory_limit. I cranked everything up.
max_execution_time = 120 ; Maximum execution time of each script, in seconds
max_input_time = 240 ; Maximum amount of time each script may spend parsing request data
memory_limit = 128M ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume (128MB)But this changed nothing in execution time since the export is executed in a flash and is still truncated.
I’m sorry if I’m insistent but I got my SQL file all ready to rock but nowhere to go. Or a truncated XML with another support group not answering and you guys have been super fast to answer so far so I’m hoping my best to get results here.
Keeping my fingers crossed.

We cannot help you http://wordpress.org/support/ or http://wordpress.com/contact-support/ -
The problem thistimethisspace is that http://wordpress.org/support/ aren’t big on replying and meanwhile my blogs are sitting high and dry, it’s kinda frustrating. I’ve REBUMPED my entry in http://wordpress.org/support/ but this is getting irritating because I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that this is an easy fix for coding pros.
-
Oh Dave what can I say? I can only repeat what I have said before.
And as for wanting and expecting coding pros to advise you free of charge and feeling irritable that they aren’t falling all over you to do so — well, isn’t that “cheeky”?
Presumably you don’t work for “free,” do you? So, if you don’t want blogs that are high and dry then why not hire a coder?
-
It’s pretty rare to see any ‘coding pros’ on the .org forums, and it is staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers, so your failure to get a response isn’t surprising. (Last time I had a query over there, I had to go begging to one of the mailing lists to get it answered.)
You have a couple of options. You can try sending another feedback and see whether anyone from Automattic is prepared to help. You can email the wp-hackers list, where the coders actually hang out, and hope that among the inevitable ‘you should have posted this on the support forums’ fallout somebody takes pity on you. Or you can head for the wp-pro mailing list and offer to pay somebody to sort this out for you. That’s all I can think of right now, and I can’t hold out too much hope for any of them.
-
So you still have your old blog? You could just upgrade it to a newer version that has the export function as well. Check out this documentation on it. After that, you might have specific questions that will get answered on WP.org forums.

thistimethisspace for such a new-agy Buddha-chick, you truly are disobliging. You gotta work on those compassion issues. I have a few good books on Buddhism you gotta read ;-) Evolving the mind is about taking it to the vertical heights, not the horizontal widening (something the feminist movement has yet to learn) ;-)
Wank, thanks, though the outlook is bleak thanks for the assist. It gives me a few cues on where to go from here. Thumbs up.
Trent, Though my WP blog is at v2.2 I could upgrade to 2.2.1 and give it a shot but unless this small upgrade specificaly upgrades the export function of the WP engine… I wonder what the added value will be. But I will give it a shot. Also, thanks for the intel that may provide further assistance with my issue.

Hi all.
I have the same problem too. I’m running wordpress v2.0.9 on my server and now I want to run my blog on wordpress.com.
I managed to backup my posts etc into an sql file, but there doesn’t seem to be a way to import it to my wordpress.com account.
can anyone help?
