Importing from self hosted WP to wordpress.com
-
I am wanting to move my current WP website goldabakes.com over to WordPress.com, however my export file size for my posts is about 150MB and I have lots of images also. How can I import this content into WordPress.com – it says the max file size 15mb for importing.
-
I am not sure the export file size should be this big. Please add the “modlook” tag to this thread, in the right sidebar of this page, and Staff will have a look.
-
Hi mods, any idea about this? I really want to move over to wordpress.com but I’m stuck!
-
Hi there,
Is it your XML file which is 150 MB? How many posts/pages do you have? That’s quite a bit of content!
-
Hi there,
Yes the XML file when I click on Export > Posts is 151.1MB!
Does this file include comments also, could spam comments be bloating the file?
-
I just purged the comments table and my XML is less than 1MB now! I guess that was the problem.
So another question I have is, how do I stop getting so many spammy comments on my blog? (sorry if this is now in the wrong topic)
-
Oh and what about porting over my images? How do I get my images from my old blog to my new wordpress.com hosted blog?
-
Once you start the import process, you will see an option to “download and import file attachments”. Select that, and all your files will automatically be moved over. Please note that your WordPress.org site should still be active and the domain should point to it for this feature to work, so don’t cancel your self hosted account just yet. You can map the domain to your WordPress.com site once the migration is complete.

Ahutosh was indeed correct about all of the imports coming over.
It’s worth noting that if you had comments that were relevant (ie; not spam) then you may not have wanted to purge them out of your database. Depending on your host you may be able to do a database restore to get them back. You could then go through and reject and delete any spammy ones.
With that said, if you don’t need any comments at all, you’re good to go!

I’m trying to also import all images into the WordPress.com site as well but they won’t import. Just remain linked to with old URL. Ideas?
-
Yes same as me now. I managed to clear down my spam comments and import my file, it says my images will be moved over automatically. I thought they were at first but turns out they were just in my cache! When I view my website now none of my images are on my new wordpress.com website – how can I move over my media files?

Hi folks,
I’m sorry for the delay, however if you’re having an issue I’ll have to ask that you create a new thread as sometimes we won’t see posts on these old ones. Go ahead and create a new post and we’ll be happy to help out!
