Importing from Typepad
-
Like probably quite a few people today, I’ve exported my Typepad blog into a text file and I’m trying to import it into WordPress. It’s imported about 370 posts out of 1500, but then it stopped importing any more. If I try running the importer again, it doesn’t prompt me for a file, it just says ‘We’re processing your import now and will send you an email when it’s all done. If you don’t hear from us within 24 hours, please contact support, and we’ll get everything fixed’ – like the original import is still running but can’t be stopped. Any ideas on how to get out of this?

I’ve tried exporting a second blog now, and I think I can see a pattern. The export file is a mixture of posts and pages: it looks like the process grinds to a halt after it’s imported the first page it finds. The only difference I can see in the export code between posts and pages is that pages are uncategorised. Is that possibly the reason for the import failing?

Hi all, there is now a support guide to help you with migration from Typepad. You can find it here
https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-from-movable-type-and-typepad/
Also, if you find that the import gets stuck, please start a new forum thread with a link to your WordPress.com site that you need help with.

I’ve found a way to get around the upload hanging, if you’re prepared to abandon your site and start again from scratch. It looks like the hang happens the first time it tries to upload a page which doesn’t have a category defined. So you’ll need to go through the file and edit it to add a category line for every one of those pages, then do the upload. Had to do that 230 or so times for my site, but it uploaded just fine after that.

Followup question. I’ve imported all the text from Typepad successfully, but now I need to get the images over too. I’ve found that there’s a plugin called Auto Upload Images that brings over the images and redirects all the internal links, but it looks like you have to be on a Business plan to do that, which is way outside my budget – I’m currently on a Free plan but looking to move to Personal or Premium ultimately. Given that this is a one-off upload, is it possible to upgrade to Business for just one month and then downgrade to a lower plan after that? Or is there another way of getting my 5000 or so images over to WordPress?
