Importing from WordPress.org tpWordPress.com

Hi, I already have a decade-old blog self-hosted with Blue host and using WordPress.org.

I plan to migrate to WordPress.com.

So, my obvious question is- can I migrate all the contents/themes/plugins to WordPress.com?

    Then I found your documentation – https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-an-entire-wordpress-site/#import-from-self-hosted-word-press

I read it and here are some of the questions on which I require some clarifications –

    1. When I import/migrate to WordPress.com, I hope nothing gets deleted from my main WordPress.org site that is currently online to users. Please explain it.

    2. I am purchasing the Business plan and as a trial, I just want to import/migrate a copy of my current site to WordPress.com to evaluate how it will work.

I do not plan to link the domain to WordPress.com sever as of now(as I am testing). So, can I purchase the Business Plan and link my WordPress.org website to the free domain of WordPress.com (business plan) – to check if the set up works?

[Kind of like staging site testing]

    3. I am purchasing the Business Plan as in my WordPress.org site, I have external plugins and themes being used. They are crucial to running the website and thus I want to check if all my existing plugins and themes will work in the WordPress.com business plan setup.

And it all rounds back to Qs – 1 – I want to checked all these without affecting the mail WordPress.org website online to users.

I hope I have explained the requirements elaborately. Hoping for answers so that I can plan the next step.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi there,

    1. When I import/migrate to WordPress.com, I hope nothing gets deleted from my main WordPress.org site that is currently online to users. Please explain it.

Nothing is deleted from your existing site. Instead an exact copy is created here on WordPress.com under your business account, using the “staging address” that we provide when you create your initial site with us.

    2. …can I purchase the Business Plan and link my WordPress.org website to the free domain of WordPress.com (business plan) – to check if the set up works?

Yes, as mentioned above your initial site with us will use a staging address. You would not typically move the domain itself until you are ready to “launch” this copy to reply the existing site. We can walk you through that process when you are ready!

    3. …I have external plugins and themes being used. They are crucial to running the website and thus I want to check if all my existing plugins and themes will work in the WordPress.com business plan setup.

Without a detailed look at the plugins and themes your site currently uses I can only answer by saying that it’s 99.9% likely that everything will come over without any issues. There are a few exceptions that we discuss here, so you may wish to check this and make sure any plugins you are using on your current site are not listed here: https://wordpress.com/support/plugins/incompatible-plugins/

It’s worth noting that in most cases a plugin is incompatible if we offer similar functionality as “built in” so it’s likely that if a plugin is not compatible it’s because we offer that as native functionality through our business hosting infrastructure.

If you have any questions about specific plugins feel free to let us know!
