importing images from Weblog
-
Hello, I have tried to import two old blogs hosted by weblog (powered by WordPress) but the media (images) are not being displayed. I don’t see the box ‘Download and import file attachments’ that I would need to check during the import process… thanks for your help!
Gerard, The NetherlandsThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Gerald,
The “Download and import…” option will show after you’ve started the import, so you’ll upload the exported file from weblog, and then WordPress.com will ask you to assign authors to the importing posts. On that screen, the checkbox should appear.
Can you confirm it’s not displaying on that page?
Cheers!
-
Hi, I can confirm the checkbox is not being displayed, I tried again to import but still the same problem and all the invisible images link to the Sanoma website :(
Is there another way?Thanks! Gerard
-
Hi Gerald,
I can try to reset the images. Part of the process will disrupt the sites, for a short bit of time. Would that be okay?
Have you made any posts to either of the sites since the import? I’d like to avoid touching those posts.
Thanks!
-
Hi again,
if you could try this with the Lenny Kuhr Discografie and Lenny Kuhr De Troubadour blogs which I have recently imported there should be no problem. The initial import on the Lenny Kuhr Fansite blog was done some time ago and a lot of posts came after that, I wouldn’t want them to be affected. If it works I can copy and paste them back to the Lenny Kuhr Fansite blog, right?
thanks again, Gerard

Howdy,
It may take a little bit to finish, but both sites are back up and the images are coming in place. If you’re copying the posts from one blog to another, it should work now.
If you have any questions or need anything else, please let me know.
Thanks!
-
Wow! How did you do this? I’m so grateful for your help! Is this a lot of work to do and is it something I could do myself too? I don’t know what would be the risk of performing the same action on the main- and subpages of the ‘Biografie’-, ‘De Troubadour’- and ‘Discografie’-pages on my lennykuhrfansite-blog because you mentioned earlier it could affect later posts? If it’s possible it would save me a lot of time in copying and pasting and updating the older pages on Lenny Kuhr Discografie and Lenny Kuhr De Troubadour. Thanks again for your great assistance, very much appreciated, I really thought all my work and my images were lost forever…

HI Gerard,
It’s an internal tool we have that generated a new version of the backup file. With the new export file, I completed deleted everything that was in your site and ran a fresh import.
For your other site, if it includes content from the other two, would linking to those existing sites work instead of importing the content again?
Happy to help! I know the pit of your stomach feeling when you think everything is lost!
Cheers!

Hi Brandon,
to be honest I’d rather have everything within the ‘lennykuhrfansite’-blog instead of linking to another site. What if I would make a new export file of the complete ‘lennykuhrfansite’, send it to you and then put back the restored file? Would it also re-import the menu-structure and put everything back where it was? Of course if there’s no other way I’ll just copy and paste… Or I could copy the new additions to the now restored pages and then copy them back… It just strikes me as odd that weblog couldn’t have done this in the first place, they abandoned a lot of Dutch webloggers with empty blogs…
thanks again!

I think that would get a little sticky and more work than we need to do.
If you want everything under one site, what about exporting from new WordPress.com sites that I fixed up yesterday, then importing into your main blog?
Typically, our importer will check to see if the post has been imported already and won’t re-import, but since it has gone through a second site, it may let it through. Honestly, haven’t had to try it quite like this before :-)
-
Maybe copying the posts will be the most simple option and updating them again… but why is it that I hardly ever get what I see in the edit-field after publishing? I mean tabs/spacing between the text and the pictures?
For instance here:
and when I have it right and change something in the post again, it’s all gone…?
-
We do strip out extra spacing, unless they are explicitly indicated as desired.
We have a post that goes quite a bit in depth on styling an individual post: http://en.support.wordpress.com/editors/styling-individual-posts-and-pages/
It has various ways to adding spaces to text to ensure the spaces are maintained after saving.
Cheers!
-
So tabs or enters in the visual field are not saved, only the code in the text field? Ok, I will continue the copy and paste proces :)
Thank you ever so much for your help!Gerard
-
That’s correct, specifically when using the
<pre>text between these tags</pre>tags. The spacing within those tags are maintained. In the Visual mode, you can select “Preformatted Text” to do the same thing.
Cheers!
-
Hi Brandon, why is it when I use ‘preformatted text’ in the visual mode that it’s visible as a very light blue bar once published? Can I make this white somewhere?
Thanks!
-
Hi again!
Your theme determines the colors and how things like that are laid out. Checking out your theme, it does add a background to the preformatted text.
Either I would suggest checking out other themes or using our Custom Design upgrade to modify the CSS. (We have folks that can help with the right CSS, though the upgrade does cost $30 a year).
Cheers!
-
Thanks Brandon, I’m just an alpha guy and the whole CSS-thing is abracadabra to me ;) I will try to do it with the simple code and make the best of it! :) done four pages now, bio, and first three troubadour-pages.
One more question if I may… is it possible to put a side column to for instance the Troubadour pages that displays only the menu of those pages? -
Hi Lenny,
You can create any number of Custom Menus in the Appearance->Menus section of your dashboard, then in Appearance->Widget add the Custom Menus widget, selecting the menu you made above.
Then, using the Visibility options at the bottom of the widget, control a bit more on which pages it appears or not.
If you have any questions or need anything else, please let me know. Cheers!
-
Thanks again, working on it…
Can you please tell me why the newly imported images are only visible on my smartphone and tablet when logged in on WP and/or one is a member of my blog? I would prefer it to be public. Is there a preference I should alter?Gerard
