importing media from .com to .org site

Hi, I recently started my own .org site and have moved my posts from .com over to .org. I’ve done this by exporting my posts from .com (under tools) and importing into .org. Have also checked the appropriate boxes for importing attachments, etc.

However, only a few images have been imported. Over a thousand images haven’t been able to import into my .org portion, and am not sure what the issue is here.

  • Howdy,

A couple of things to check/try:

The import process relies on your new host’s server to bring in the content. Sometimes, if the server is set to kill a process after a certain amount of time, it can prematurely end the import process.

Additionally, the import process often will continue behind the scenes, even after the on-screen prompts say that they’re successful. Generally, you can see if this is the case if when you visit your Media Library on your .org site, the newest file is the uploaded import. Once the import is finished, the file is removed. If it has been an excessive amount of time (a day), it likely means it was killed early before finishing.

A couple of ways to check this is to contact support for your new host to ask about what happened. Another is to attempt the import again, with smaller chunks. Instead of exporting all of your data, choose a subset (a category, a date range, etc) and import that into your .org site to try to stay under any limitations set by your new host.

If you have any questions or need anything else, please let me know. Cheers!

Great, I’ll get in touch with the new host. Thanks!
