Importing media library from one WordPress.com blog to another

  • Unknown's avatar

Once a year I export several user pages from one wordpress.com blog and then import them into another wordpress.com blog.
Most of these pages contain scanned images which were originally uploaded to the Media Library of Blog 1. If I now go to Blog 2, and click on an image on a given page, I have noticed that the link information still refers back to the Media Library of Blog 1.
Is this correct? Are the images on pages in Blog 2 actually still tied to the Blog 1 Media Library?
    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

When you use the export and then re-import feature in the Tools section of your blog, it should indeed copy any media which has been embedded in your posts or pages over from Blog 1 over to Blog 2.

What blogs are you referring to and which pages? I’ll take a look and see if anything jumps out at me.

    Hi!
Blog 1 (the original blog) is:
    burfordmedia.wordpress.com
Blog 2 (the one receiving the pages) is: burfordmediagraveyard.wordpress.com

If you go to a typical page in Blog 2, such as:
    http://burfordmediagraveyard.wordpress.com/archived-work/former-students-pages-2010-12/a2-students-hanalola/a2-students-hanalola-main-task/a2-students-hanalola-main-task-planning/
…and then go to ‘edit page’, scroll down, click on any of the scanned images and click for its info screen… you should see that the Link section still refers back to the original blog.

Guess my main concern is that if I delete items in Blog 1’s Media Library (and I do need to, as it contains nearly 10,000 images!) they might then ‘disappear’ from pages in Blog 2. OR, maybe the Link info is just irrelevant??

    Thanks!
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for giving the additional details! I’m working with one of our developers to see if we can’t automate the adjustment of all of these links for the image files. I’ll let you know as soon as I have any additional information for you!

Update: sadly I have to confirm that by deleting original items from the Media Library of Blog 1, they do indeed DISAPPEAR from the pages in Blog 2.

In other words, Blog 2 is still referencing files from Blog 1’s Library. I deleted several images as a test (and other WP users please take note) I have damaged my blog.

    Hi Roger,

Yes, the links for Blog 2 has not yet been updated to point away from Blog 1. Our developers have not had a chance to go through and update those links yet, if they are going to be able to. I’ll let you know as soon as I have additional information.

    I’m sorry for the delay!

    Heya Roger,

I’m so sorry it’s taken me so long to get back to you!

Our developers finally had a chance to go through and fix all of the image links on your blog. It took a while for it to complete, but as I click through the site, it’s looking like the 7,000 plus images or so are all pointing correctly now! :)

Please feel free to go through your site at your leisure and let me know if you find anything left uncorrected!

    Hi
Thank you very much for doing this! I have checked through and as far as I can see most links are now pointing in the correct direction.
Quick question though: in future, when I want to import pages from one blog to another, will I still have this same problem? Is it something I’m doing wrong at the export/import stage?
    Thanks!

No, it’s not something you’re doing wrong and ideally this should not happen again (it was a glitch in the first place).

If, worst case scenario, it happens again, certainly let me know and not only will we fix it again, but we’ll look in to what is happening and try to fix it. I have a feeling it’s because there are just so many images that the transfer process is dying, however I couldn’t be sure without some extensive testing.

In the mean time, I’m glad it’s set up correctly for the next year!
