My blog had 52 entries last year. How can I import all of them to Word so that I can do edits and rewrites in preparation for self publishing?

Do you want to export your WordPress.com content? If so, you can do so in your Dashboard under Tools > Export.
Note that this file is not going to be in a format that MS Word can understand, as the file includes a lot of data specific to a blogging platform.
However, you can convert individual posts and pages to PDFs by choosing the PDF option in your Print menu. In Firefox, it’s File->Print and then there’s a PDF button at the bottom with a ‘Save as PDF’ option.
There are also some services that will turn your blog into a printable book. http://www.blurb.com/ is one, for example.
Finally, it looks like there are some third-party options that allow you to turn your .xml file into a PDF, and then convert the PDF into a MS Word doc. For example, a Google search turned up http://www.slideshare.net/fionabeal/convert-your-blog-to-a-pdf-and-a-word-file
