Importing My Site

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve just run into a problem after buying a plan. I need to import or upload my current WordPress site, but when I click on “Import” I am taken to my current site. Do I have to redirect my URL in order for the import feature to work or is there another way? I really didn’t want my site to have the downtime it takes to redirect, then import. I’d rather work out any problems then do a redirect to make things seamless.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

What is the address of the site you’re trying to import to? You have several sites in your account, including both sites hosted on WordPress.com, and sites hosted elsewhere and just connected here via Jetpack.

It is for one of these Jetpack sites, sailbeforesunset.com, that you’ve bought a Jetpack plan. Clicking on the import link for that site will take you to the importer page in WP-Admin for that site – the Jetpack plan you bought for that site does not move the site to our hosting. It just enables the Jetpack backup and security features on the site.

I created my site sailbeforesunset.com here and bought the basic package. My site that I host on my server is also sailbeforesunset.com.

  • Hi @tomperanteau, thanks. We see a Jetpack plan that’s intended for self-managed sites.

Did you intend to keep the site hosted through Spectrum Business (in which case let us know what you’re hoping to do with the import), or do you want to move it to WordPress.com instead?

If you want to move it here, here are the steps I’d recommend:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/coming-from-self-hosted/

Basically, you’ll go to http://sailbeforesunset.com/wp-admin, Tools, Export.

Then to this link for the import: https://wordpress.com/settings/import/sailbeforesunset.wordpress.com

There are more details in that document, but if you get stuck with any step please let us know.

Also if you intend to have a hosted plan here on WordPress.com for that site, you can add it via this link: https://wordpress.com/plans/sailbeforesunset.wordpress.com

    Cheers!

Thanks, but I do not want to import into my sailbeforesunset.wordpress.com site. I want to import into my new site hosted on WordPress that is named sailbeforesunset.com. I am moving my site off of my server where I self-host and onto the wordpress.com platform. When I am in my control panel the “Import” link on the left takes me to my current self-hosted site.

Will I need to redirect my URL before I import? I was trying to work out importing testing the site when it was completed on wordpress.com before I did the redirect.

  • I want to import into my new site hosted on WordPress that is named sailbeforesunset.com.

Got it. We don’t actually have a site hosted here by that name. I see you bought a Jetpack plan a self-hosted site by that name, though (which again, is different from hosting the site here). Was that not your intention?

We can help you get sailbeforesunset.com hosted here though.

First you’ll need to set up a new wordpress.com site (or use an existing one) as the base address. Then you’ll import the content. And once everything is in place, you can add the domain so that it shows instead of the wordpress.com address.

I think I see where I made a mistake. It did not seem clear that I was buying the Jetpack package. I thought I was buying hosting. I will look for the WordPress hosting option and buy that so I can import my site to your servers.

    Hi tomperanteau,

I will look for the WordPress hosting option and buy that so I can import my site to your servers.

If you want to create a site and host it here on WordPress.com, these plans will be compatible with the site:

    https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Hosting is included with each plan (even free) so it’s not something you need to find separately through another provider.

This information about moving from WordPress.org to WordPress.com may also be useful:

Please let us know if you have any questions.
