Importing old blog from xml site

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello!

I’m trying to switch my old blog to this platform. I have a mass backup of everything packed in an .xml file. However, when I tried to import it into WordPress, I found no option for the .xml file alone but rather only for direct transfer from sites themselves. Which is not possible for me.

I’ve found a plug-in that should do the trick in the wordpress plug-ins directory, but apparently free plan websites can’t use plug-ins? I’m very confused.

Is there really no way to import from my .xml file alone?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Unless you have a WordPress.com site on the Business plan you cannot install additional plugins.

Which platform did the xml file come from?
Have you consulted this support doc?

    Import a Website

  • Hi there,

However, when I tried to import it into WordPress, I found no option for the .xml file alone but rather only for direct transfer from sites themselves.

Where do you see this option? We ONLY support importing .xml files on WordPress.com from most services.

What is the old site, is that site still online, and which service did it use?

My old blog was on LiveJournal. There is a way to import from LiveJournal in the options, but only if you still have an account there, insert your LiveJournal log-in data and export directly from the site. I only have the .xml file saved on my computer, though!

So I tried to see if there was an option to import the file directly from my computer, but nothing,

    Hi oujidere,

Without a LiveJournal account, you could try importing the .xml file using the WordPress importer:

    https://wordpress.com/settings/import/oujidere.wordpress.com

It’s worth noting that .xml files contain links to images on the original site, not the files themselves. If the original LiveJournal site is not longer online, the importer won’t be able to retrieve those images.

Let me know how you get on.

Thank you for the suggestion! I did try, but this is the message I received:
“Questo non è un file WXR, numero di versione WXR mancante/non valido” [This is not a WXR file, WXR version number either missing or invalid]

As for the images, I thought as much after taking a look into the .xml file. Thankfully I have at least most of them saved on my computer though.

  • Hi there,

Can you please upload the XML file to your Media Library so I can check it?

    Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Sure!

My media library didn’t seem to find it on my desktop somehow? So I uploaded it to my Drive. Hope it’s not a problem.

This is the XML file I got. Also, if I saved it as CSV file then I’d get this, but somehow OpenOffice marks it as an XML file anyways. I tried uploading both with the same error message.

Ah! Double post, but that’s just the latest XML file I created from my old blog. I have four in total for each of the last four months.

Hi @oujidere, the file you posted on Drive doesn’t look like an XML export file, but perhaps a page that was saved from a browser “save as”. I’ve pulled the content out of you Drive posting and put it into a draft page on your site named Drive XML file content.

Can you open the XML file you have on your computer and then compare it to the file you put onto Drive to make sure they are the same?

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you! They’re the same, unfortunately.

I made a screenshot of what happens when I use the LiveJournal export function to retrieve the XML file. This is what appears, the line in Italian is basically “no style sheet is associated to this document, here’s the tree of the document”. I hope I got the jargon correctly.

Otherwise I can retreive the CSV as shown before but I guess that’s pretty much useless.

I would say that there is a problem on the LiveJournal end then as I’m assuming you had a lot more content.

Did you try running the LiveJournal importer from https://oujidere.wordpress.com/wp-admin/import.php? It does not need to have an exported XML file, it can import directly from LiveJournal using their API.

Ah, I see you say that isn’t possible. Can I ask why it isn’t? Has the site been deleted?

My journal’s been abruptly suspended a few days ago. I still haven’t been notified about the reason why, so I’m unable to fix it, but until then importing straight from the API won’t work.

  • Let us know when the journal is back online and active and if the API import suggestion from thesacredpath works.

I’m not sure when and if that’ll ever happen at the moment, haha, but alright! I’ll post an update here if it does.
