Importing RSS Feeds as Posts

Add topic to favorites
I am trying to find a way to import an RSS Feed into a WordPress.com blog. I see there are widgets for this available on a self hosted WordPress site, but is it possible here?

No, it’s specifically disabled AND disallowed.

WordPress.COM is not an aggregator, it’s a platform for original blogging.

Can I include an RSS fee for Wikimedia’s Picture of the Day on my WordPress blog? Is that disallowed?

Importing via RSS into the post column is disallowed. You can put the rss feed in a widget, but the picture won’t show in the widget.

Although I used Tumblr as an example, you can show RSS updates from places other than Tumblr right in a wordpress.com page or post. It will also show images.

WordPress.com does provide RSS widgets which can ONLY be used in posts and on pages. This is for a specific reason. They do not wish to provide the ability to imports RSS feeds into pages and posts because it’s the tool that’s most favored by sploggers who steal blog content from others sites, and by spammers who are determined to set up multiple blogs and fill them with duplicated content so they can make money on the ads.

WordPress.COM is not an aggregator, it’s a platform for original blogging.

I would be really, really, really careful about putting up a bunch of RSS feeds in pages or posts using @sanjidas’s solution as it could very well get your blog suspended. As @raincoaster says, wordpress.COM is not an aggregator. Having feeds in the sidebar is one thing, but having them as main content is quite another.

I’ve seen many, many blogs suspended for that. And as soon as staff are aware of the method, they’ll work to disable it.

Can staff please clarify the confusion here?

Honestly, it’s one thing to use rss feeds to autopublish as single posts (as in, splogs) and another thing to use an rss widget to show updates of another site. The RSS widget solution I suggested is similar to using rss widgets in the side bar, only they allow posting in pages and posts.

Am I wrong?

With widgets there is a practical limit to the number you can put into a sidebar or sidebars. You could put up 10,000 posts with 10,000 RSS feeds in them and then never write an actual post.

There are certainly people that would not abuse this, but just as with meta tags, there are many out there that would abuse it.

Well, the primary concern is the quantity? if there is a limitation to how many such rss widgets I can use in individual posts, then staff should say so …

I have been planning to create such a blog so that I can get updates of different web search results in different posts (mostly images) easily. So you are saying when I finally publish the blog (it’s currently not public), staff will eventually suspend it?

We will suspend sites using automated methods to post. RSS feeds are no exception.

Using RSS feeds using a Flash widget is not an automated method, you have to create a post manually. Just wondering if you are aware of the key difference here.

Just wondering if Panos’ blog and my blog are going to be suspended for using the (similar) RSS widgets in our posts.

Putting RSS feeds into pages or posts on a blog is automated posting.

@sanjidas, OTHER people are creating the posts that show up in your site on an RSS feed (unless it is another site owned by the same person), but it is still an automated posting method regardless.

That’s true for the RSS widgets used in posts (by me and Panos and probably others who experimented with our ideas).
