Importing stopped and won’t restart

  • Unknown's avatar

The situation: I was importing a blog from tumblr, and accidentally closed the tag. After restarting the browser, I opened the Importer again and it appeared to be still in progress (there was the wheel gif under Action/Status), but the number of imported posts remained the same for a long time.

I thought it needed a restart, and pressed ‘Clear Account Information’, which should stop the process. Under Action/Status, it now said ‘Import this blog’. Attempting to import again, I got the message ‘You can only have one running import at a time. Please wait for the current one to complete.’ I disconnected and reconnected to tumblr and retried, same thing.

Basically, the process stopped and I can’t restart it. I don’t know what else to do. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Sorry, correcting the automated message, the blog I need help with is https://howtoseewithoutacamera.home.blog/

  • Hi there,

I’ve reset the Tumblr importer for your site so you can try again.

If it seems to take long, please be patient and don’t try cancelling the process yourself – we’re experiencing a high volume of imports from Tumblr at the moment causing a backlog of pending imports in our system. The imports are being run in the order they are submitted.

If the new import doesn’t complete within 24 hours, please let us know.

Thank you, but unfortunately it didn’t complete in 24+ hours, and arguably it didn’t even (re)start when I pressed “Import this blog”. Under Action/Status it says “In Progress”, but no new posts have been imported during all this time. And under “Imported Posts”, it says “0/8209” – although 3150 posts HAD been imported (and are now online), before the process froze.

    Is this fixable? Thanks again.

  • Your restarted import is still queued. It hasn’t run yet, but it will be run once the importer gets to it. For now all we can do is wait – we’re still getting hundreds of new imports every hour and the importer is processing thousands of posts a minute, but the backlog is quite big so it might take a while.

    Understood, thank you very much.

  • Thank you for understanding :)

So about a week later it’s stuck at ~75% (apparently working, but stuck, presumably due to lots of people trying to do the same thing at the same time).

And I wouldn’t bother you, but we have a deadline, 2 days before tumblr… implodes, and part of the content becomes irretrievable. Any chance the importer finishes before then? Can I do anything?

  • Hi –

I’ve deleted the stalled job and reset the tool for your site. Please give it another try. Be sure that your Tumblr account is connected to WordPress.com. Write back here and let me know how this works.

Ah, that may have been too late. Update:

~2 hours after your last message, I saw it and restarted the importer.

~4 hours after your last message, at which point 0 posts had been imported, tumblr took the blog down. The content wasn’t deleted: it’s hidden from the public (the url redirects to a tumblr message) but I can access it from my (tumblr) dashboard. If the importer has the same access I have, then it should be salvageable. I sincerely hope that giving you read AND write privileges makes this feasible. But I don’t know how the importer works, exactly, so I can’t be sure if that’s the case.

And now, ~14 hours after your last message, 0 posts have been imported.

So what am I looking at here? Is my import somewhere in a long queue, and will eventually complete? Or is it too late, and the content’s no longer there as far as the importer is concerned?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Your new import is still in the queue.

I have no way of knowing if we’ll still be able to import it, though, as we don’t know if the changes Tumblr made also extends to their API we’re using to do the import.

I’ve asked our team responsible for the importer if they have any way to check this, but right now our best bet is to wait and see what happens.

If you haven’t yet, I would recommend doing a Tumblr export on their end as well, just as additional backup. (I waited 3 days to get one for my long-abandoned 300-post Tumblr when I tried exporting as a test, so looks like they’re struggling with a queue on that side also.)

    Okay then, we wait. :)

Thanks for the backup recommendation, I’ll do you one better! Tumblr’s exporter is indeed terrible, but there’s a python program that will back up your stuff (minus uploaded video and audio files) A LOT faster, like a few minutes for ~300 posts and a few hours for ~8000. You can find it here:

    https://github.com/bbolli/tumblr-utils/blob/master/tumblr_backup_for_beginners.md

It sadly doesn’t restore tag functionality (the tags link to tumblr) or your theme layout, but otherwise it’s amazing, and frankly the reason I am so chill about this whole disaster. :p

  • Good news: we were able to confirm that imports should still continue as normal even though a site is blocked on Tumblr – it doesn’t look like they’ve extended that blocking to their API, we suspect to allow people to still move their content away. So as soon as your current import reaches the front of the queue it should continue importing your remaining posts.

I’m glad to hear you have another backup option as well :)

    Yay, the import was completed!
Thank you very much for the support.

  • You’re very welcome, and thanks for letting us know!
