Importing the hosted XML export file doesn't work
-
Hello,
I am trying to move from hosted WordPress website to the free wordpress.com.I read the documentation:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/view-all/did all steps, and got a 2 MB XML file to restore here.
I received this message on-screen:
Import WordPress
Processing…We’re processing your import now and will send you an email when it’s all done. If you don’t hear from us within 24 hours, please contact support, and we’ll get everything fixed.
I got a confirmation email from wordpress.com.
But: Nothing is there.. no posts, no pages, nothing!
Is that because it is hosted on a subdirectory (domain.com/web)?
or what?
I also tried the postes-only export, which was strangely small (6 KB)
and the result is same: nothing imported.Do you know any solution for this?
Thank you
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Thank you so much ariwinokur
I hope anyone on the forum to help me.. with whatever workaround available.
You know.. hundreds of posts, many categories, etc. will take huge time to be done one by one, copy paste. Thanks again :)

You forgot to put the modlook tag for Staff assistance. I did it.

hi @benhebaha,
I don’t see any errors on our end. Could you try to upload the file one more time and let us know if you have any trouble.
A 2MB file may take some time and will work best on a stable Internet connection as well.

Worked this time!
I had to stay not using internet connection for anything.. hoping nothing alter the connection
It worked! One thing needs to be addressed: contributors/users
When it imported the posts, it asked me if I want to assign the articles of “username” to drop-down menu of current usernames. That means:
– You have to manually re-create all users from scratch, before doing the import. Please add this notice to the page:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/view-all/So users not get this question after actually imported all content.. then go and do it but after the import, one article at a time.
Much appreciation for everyone here helped us!! :)

Hi benhebaha,
Glad the import worked. You are correct, you’ll want to first invite the users via their WordPress.com username to your site before the import so you’ll be able to assign the post to them.
In the event you want to change the author after import it is possible to use the bulk editor to assign the author after the import:

Instead of adding on to this thread, please start a new thread for a new issue. After you create the thread, tag the thread with “modlook” and a Staff member will address your issue.

Just for anyone else who may look in on this thread in the future, the MODLOOK tag goes in the tags section of the sidebar of the forum post itself or at the bottom of the form if you are adding a new thread from the create new forum thread form.
