Importing to wordpress blog from tar.gz file
-
A few months ago I had a blog hosted by Hostgator using WordPress.org. I cancelled with Hostgator and because I did not have any immediate plans to move it, I just made a backup with cpanel and kept it on my hard drive.
I now wish to post this same blog on a wordpress.com but have no sweet clue how to import this tar.gz backup file.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Any idea what’s inside the .tar.gz file?
If it’s a cpanel backup file, it probably contains your site’s files and a database dump. If it is, it might take quite some steps to import the content to WordPress.com, though.
You might need to create a local WordPress install first for that backup, and then use that WordPress install to export the content (an XML file), and that file can then be used in WordPress.com’s importer.

Thanks for the reply. I don’t hate the contents in front of me but there’s admin mysql etc.
So I would have to install WordPress through another host to access cpanel and use this file to make an XML to export? Host gator would obviously make me pay for another account to do this. Is there any other way?
Thanks. -
A free alternative is to install WordPress locally (on your computer only) and restore it there.
That will be quite technical, though. If you do want to go that route, the best place to ask around is the WordPress.org support forum. http://wordpress.org/support/
