Importing wordpress blog -server busy

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve been trying for a couple of hours to import posts to my blog wordandtable from another wordpress site but keep getting the following message:

    503 Service Unavailable
The server is temporarily busy, try again later! Powered By LiteSpeed Web Server
Lite Speed Technologies is not responsible for administration and contents of this web site!

Does anyone have any idea how long this might be the case?

    Thanks in advance

Which sites are we talking about? We need the actual URLs to be able to help you.

Hi raincoaster. Thanks for your help. I am trying to import into http://wordandtable.wordpress.com I am using the import from another wordpress blog function, which means uploading an export file I have downloaded to my computer. The blog I have downloaded this file from is found at http://will.blogsavy.com/
I did try to import a blogger account I have into a test wordpress site here with no problem. Of course in that case I did not have to download or upload anything. Does this reply help you to help me?

Yes. I think that you’re using the wrong importer. That’s for importing from one wordpress.com blog to another, is it not? And one of these isn’t a WordPress.com blog. Does the blogsavy.com blog have an exporter built-in? That could save you some steps.

Yes it does, just like wordpress.com. Their export page reads:

    Export

When you click the button below WordPress will create an XML file for you to save to your computer.

This format, which we call WordPress eXtended RSS or WXR, will contain your posts, comments, custom fields, and categories.

Once you’ve saved the download file, you can use the Import function on another WordPress blog to import this blog.

I have used wordpress.com export files to import to other wordpress (non .com) blogs without any problem in the past, and I believe I have been able to import non wordpress.com blogs to wordpress.com before as well.

I am going to try to import posts from one wordpress.com blog to another wordpress.com blog to see if I get the same message.

I was able to import and export between wordpress.com blogs, but still get the 503 server busy page when trying to import a non wordpress.com blog (though it is still a wordpress blog) into wordandtable.wordpress.com. I quess my question is why I get a server busy response instead of something like cannot import file.

How big is the file faith2hope2love? Sometimes when the export file is large, it chokes in the import process. If you try again later on and it doesn’t work, report back!

the file i was trying to import was not large – less than 80 kb. I was able to find an older wordpress.com export file that had most of the posts on it that I needed to put in wordandtable, so I imported it and will delete what I don’t need. No matter how many times I tried to import a non-wordpress.com wordpress file, however, I got the server busy page. The file I ended up importing was about 500 kb and imported without a hitch. It seems as though since both wordpress.com and blogsavy.com use the same import/export process that I would be able to import from one to another, but alas, I could not.

For now, I guess we can consider this thread resolved unless you want me to try again just to try to figure out what’s wrong. I could send you the file in question, if you’d like, and you could try importing it. Maybe it is something on my end (I did try to do this in both Opera and Firefox as well). It seems to me as though this shouldn’t be a problem.

If you can be certain that blogsavy.com uses wordpress 2.1 or greater, then it will have the proper export file. If it is an wordpress MU installation, then I am not sure, but it should work fine as well. I am glad that you at least got the posts across! The size of the file shouldn’t be the issue on this one as I am talking more about 5 megs +

Thanks Trent and raincoaster for your help.

I am just trying to get all of my blogs in one place. After flirting around with other wordpress blog hosts out there, I have come to realize that overall wordpress.com is the best there is.

Now, if I can just convince someone to add a few more three-column flexible themes . . . .

I’m with you on the need for three column flexible themes. :)

    to all

i am experiencing the same problem. i have a wordpress 2.1.3 blog at blog.hiredavid.com. i am trying to move it to hiredavid.wordpress.com. i used the export function at blog.hiredavid.com, and it created a 323KB file, wordpress.2007-04-29.xml, which, when viewed in editpad, contained all my posts, as well as many spam posts caught by spamcatcher but not posted.

when i went to hiredavid.wordpress.com and used the import function, it seemed to upload the file. but when i clicked on “submit” on the “import and assign author” page (after not changing the author), i eventually received the same “503 server unavailable” notice mentioned above. when i logged into my blog at hiredavid.wordpress.com, the earliest 3 posts were there, along with their respective images, but none of the later posts. i deleted these posts so that doing a “view site” showed there were no posts, and ran through the entire procedure again, starting at the export from blog.hiredavid.com. i had the very same result as before.

am i just going to have to hand-copy all my posts from blog.hiredavid.com to hiredavid.wordpress.com? again, blog.hiredavid.com is a wordpress 2.1.3 blog

    thank you

David, you’ve posted this three times now. Please don’t do that. All you’re doing is creating more work for the rest of us here.

I would clear out your spam queue first at your old blog, reexport out and then try again.
