Importing WP Website from a different hosting service

I have a WP controlled website that’s registered with another domain provider. I want to import my website to my WP account, but there’s no ‘tools’ section under ‘m my site’. Any fixes to how I can import my website to WP when I can’t access the dashboard?

    Thank you in advance.

  • Hi!

Are you able to access that site’s dashboard here?
    http://www.atlikarincacocukevi.k12.tr/wp-admin

It likely has a different login and password than the ones you’ve used here on WordPress.com. From there you should able to find that site’s export options.

I am able to access a sidebar or dashboard on my self hosted site yes. But it doesn’t give me options like changing theme colors, which is why I want to be able to access it on WP.

Thank you for the link. On it it says:
“Migrating your site will completely overwrite the existing site on WordPress.com“

If I decide to cancel my plan and go back to self hosting in the future, would I be able to do that?

Can I access features like changing theme colors (with an upgrade if necessary) if I just change the DNS setting on my current domain provider?

    Hi there,

If I decide to cancel my plan and go back to self hosting in the future, would I be able to do that?

Yes, you can cancel the plan and point the domain back to your self-hosted site anytime you want (please check out our refund policy here).

However, note that in order to be able to do that, you will need to keep the self-hosted WordPress.org site active as well. In other words, if you cancel the current hosting where you have the WordPress.org site, you likely won’t be able to get back to that site as your hosting provider will delete the site. So that’s something to keep in mind.

Can I access features like changing theme colors (with an upgrade if necessary) if I just change the DNS setting on my current domain provider?

Basically, when you point the domain’s DNS records to our server, you’ll see the site you created with us on WordPress.com. So whatever content you have on your WordPress.com site will show up after you’ve configured the domain.

Speaking of theme colors, can you specify what exactly you mean by this? Different themes have different levels of customization options. Most themes that have the ability to customize colors have the options under Appearance → Customize. So it’ll really depend on what theme you have active and whether that theme has the option to change theme colors.

If you upgrade to the WordPress.com Business plan and use a third-party theme, that may have more theme color options located either in the customizer or in the theme-specific settings page in the dashboard (again, it depends on the theme). So, you won’t get theme color options just by pointing the domain to WordPress.com.

Thank you for the detailed info.

The theme I’m using is “Kid’s Academy”. I want to change the colors of the header menu titles, page and blog titles, the general color palette that the theme uses. I tried to change some of the colors the theme uses by editing the blog entries directly and changing some entries in the css, but I couldn’t find menu titles in the css or couldn’t find how they were coded.

With the dashboard and colors & background option on the WP site I hope to set my own color palette for the site.

  • That theme is not developed by WordPress.com, so you wouldn’t see additional features accessing your customizer from WordPress.com.
You would need to adjust the colors using custom CSS, just as you would now.
Also, bear in mind that to use a third-party theme like this, you would need to upgrade to plan Business.

You can also just create a free WordPress.com site and test it out. See if there are themes you like. You can try our themes without activating them by clicking on the three dots next to the theme’s name and choosing the option Try&Customize.

This will allow you to see how the theme would look like with your content and how could you customize it.

Thank you for all the help.

I will try to change the theme colors with custom CSS.

Have a good one, and thanks again.
