importing xml issues

    I used to have a wordpress site that was hosted by a friend. I exported that site before closing it down. I have the xml file. It is not that big really. I followed the import instructions to the letter. I can SEE the file in my media library but I get a message that it is still importing. It should not take this long, should it? I have looked through the support messages and again, I have followed it to the letter. What is holding up? help!!

    Update: it has been over 24 hours. Still says it is importing. In that time, I have manually added all of the pages and posts, so no longer need it to import (nor do I care anymore). How long will it attempt to import and can I get it to stop?
