How can I manage several languages in WordPress?
-
Hello,
I would like to know if there is ANY way to optimize the use of 4 different languages for the same blog, or can they only be handled as if they were 4 completely independent and unrelated sites?
Your “help” on languages offers translation FAQ, transliteration, internationalization and language settings, but it’s all limited to one specific language or wordpress “inwards”.At progresohumano.wordpress.com you can see we try to use spanish, english, italian and dutch to start with, each with its corresponding domain name. But we just found out that costumization of the CSS has to be acquired per domain, we thought it would be per user. We think it would not be correct to have to pay 4 times to be allowed to make the same small adaptions to the same theme, see the difference between http://progresohumano.wordpress.com/ and http://humanprogress.wordpress.com/.
In this globalized world we understand multilangue should actually be default, not just an option anymore. More specifically on the internet and specially with a “broadcasting” service like wordpress. Don’t you agree that using several languages, in fact, should be stimulated, not have additional barriers?
Please inform.
Regards from Seville, Spain.

Hi there,
You raise a very great point regarding users with multiple-language needs. This would be a great addition to WordPress and I have registered your suggestion with our team so that we can keep it in mind for future updates.
In the meantime, you are correct. The CSS upgrade is purchased per blog, per year.
As an alternative to paying for four different upgrades, can you let me know if will you be maintaining the four separate domain names for your blogs?
If not, you may want to try using Categories to separate your blog posts according to the language in which they are posting. This way, you can manage all of your content from one WordPress account while still being able to separate the languages into different pages.
To do this, you could mark any Spanish blog posts as “Espanol” and Italian posts as “Italiano.” Then, you could add these Categories to your site’s navigation bar by following the directions available here.

Hi Evarlese thank you for your fast and kind reply.
I am aware that I might have put the question a bit harsh, but I have come a long and frustrating way in trying to set up multilingual webs under other systems, encountering frequent set-backs.
This is my first experience with WordPress and maybe had my expectations a little high (on the other hand, the “translation-ready” definition might have added a bit to that…).Anyway, in the meantime I had already drawn the conclusion that what you propose might indeed be the best option within the circumstances. In fact I had started off with that under beyonddarwin.wordpress.com as you can see there. And more so, after discovering, just yesterday, the nice dropdown effect of the top menu bar that actually offers the languages with their subsequent categories (the Motion theme – would that be possible in the Greyezed theme too?).
So after this first fumbling around I guess I will stick to just Human Progress (it actually sounds best in english anyway) and from there on derive to the different languages using the Motion theme (if not possible with Greyezed).
One thing though, would it be possible to “assing” the custom design option I payed for to “humanprogress” instead of “progresohumano”, just in case?
Ehr… and just to make sure, is there any way to assign a different theme or custom design (background?) only to some pages? Motion theme goes very well with the Human Progress concept in general, but the Greyzed theme would be marvelous for that specific topic.
Tnx!

oops… but then again, using just one domain also means just one main language, also for the menus etc.
And I think I just discovered that the FB like button in the menu is one and the same over the whole site, unless there is a more custom option which I haven’t seen yet. Topics vary over the site and FB like should vary along or not be there sometimes.
I’ll continue investigating. -
I’ve transfered your Custom Design upgrade from Progreso Humano to Human Progress, as you requested.
Regarding changing the background or design depending on the page, that may be possible depending on the type of page you’re referring to and the classes available in each particular theme. When you begin your customization, I encourage you to post in the CSS Customization Forum for more in depth assistance:

If you’re interested, please post your suggestions in our Ideas Forum as a way of generating a larger conversation around multi-lingual blogs on WordPress.com:
