'Improved' editor destroys blog posts
-
Of late the ‘improved’ editor has been destroying my blog posts. The problem is this: when I switch from the old editor (which I prefer) to the new (which has a better scheduling system), it doesn’t load the text or content and instead sits there connecting to various services. If an auto-save occurs during this time, it saves the blank page over my carefully prepared posts. I have lost a number of posts that way. It is a new phenomenon and I have noticed no such loading delays with any other service or product. Nor have I changed my computer configuration or software. Can anybody assist?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Matthew. This shouldn’t be happening. Is this for draft posts or already published ones? You should be able to recover the missing text from the revision history in the WP-Admin editor. Please let me know the title of any post that is completely lost after this happened.
Can you please try clearing the browser cache and cookies and see if that makes any difference? If possible, also check if the same thing happens with a different browser.
Please let me know your exact browser and OS version where this is happening.
Do you have JavaScript enabled in your browser? Do you have any ad-blocker, privacy or anti-malware browser extensions that might be interfering with code loading on the page?

Hi Herman – good to hear from you and thanks for coming back to me so promptly! Hope all is well your way. My current configuration is:
Firefox 52.0.1
Chrome 57.0.2987
Windows 10 v 1607 build 14393.969The problem occurs on both browsers. I have no add-ons and use the vanilla defaults, which means javascript is running. I’m running AV software but have no problems with any other web-apps. Also, the problem has been around since before these versions were installed. It began quite suddenly some weeks ago.
If I clean out the cache, it works OK the first time but then the problem occurs.
I also get the problem when I am using my Microsoft Surface Pro 3 tablet (same version Windows, but different AV and different browser – IE 11.0.11).
To me the fact that it’s independent of software and hardware suggests the problem is with the code being served (and it seems to be waiting on third-party services). But I’ll stand corrected on that! Hope you can help.

Hmm. There have been intermittent reports of this, but we’ve never been able to consistently replicate it, and in all the cases I’ve seen clearing browser data and/or resetting the internet connection resolved the problem.
Can you please open dev tools in Chrome and then load an existing draft in the editor with the JavaScript console open. Take a screen shot of any errors you see there. If you upload those to your media library I’ll be able to download them from there.
Also please try it with the Network tab open to see if there are any specific resources that are taking long to load. Hopefully it will give us something we can use narrow down the cause of this.
Were you able to restore the missing content from revisions, at least?

Hi – done. There seem to be a lot of delays in resource loading. I’ve checked for bad extensions, but both Firefox and Chrome are clean. My system is also malware free. Thanks for looking into this.

Hi Matthew. Thanks for those.
By the Network tab I meant the main network tab in dev tools, not the one in the Console.
https://cloudup.com/cIZts4bPunm
That shows a graphic display of loading resources with a bar indicating how long each one takes to load. Can you please grab a screen shot of that for me as well? Then I can give all that info to our devs to try and figure out what’s causing this.
Thanks :)

Hi – I haven’t been able to reproduce the fault since Thursday. Nothing’s changed on my PC (I didn’t even run it Friday!) – but I will keep you posted and load the files if it reappears. Intermittent faults are the hardest to find! The dev tools network report shows a lot of delays associated with javascript but hasn’t killed loading the text of the post.

Thanks for the update, and I’m glad it’s working for now.
We’ve been trying to nail down the cause of this bug for a while, so please let me know if it happens again, along with any info you can grab at the time.
I’ve downloaded the screen shots you’ve already provided, so you can delete those from your media library if you want.
