Improvement to Tag Surfer
-
I love Tag Surfer, but I wonder if it could be better.
REALLY LONG POSTS can be a chore to scroll through and hog way too much of the available space.
SHORT POSTS can be read in their entirety, discouraging visitors from actually clicking through to the blog unless they feel compelled to comment.
Could Tag Surfer be more of a tease, like Tag pages, and only offer up the first few lines of a post, to encourage click-through for blogs that get to the point quickly?

What does that mean, drmike?
Nobody’s using Tag Surfer?
How else do you find what you’re looking for? -
If more people used the More tag, I’d read a lot fewer blogs, though. I find it off-putting, particularly because I am very lazy and very cynical about transparent attempts to up the page views, which a More tag often is. I realize for the Empress of Stats to come out and openly distain a tactic that actually works is bizarre, but hey, it’s Halloween.

and wp has to improve the kind of posts pulled into tag surfer. i keep getting really outdated posts, sometimes from as far as a year back. i’ve already sent feedback but i’m still facing this problem. very frustrating because sometimes i feel like commenting, then i realise it’s such an old post it’s sort of pointless to comment anymore.
-
But with the new Dashboard, wouldn’t that post be bumped to the attention of the blog owner, making it fresh again? Sounds to me like it’s worth a try, at least for a few weeks.
-
raincoaster: are you replying to my comment? cos i don’t quite get you. *scratches head*
-
Now I understand, drmike.
You’re referring to the <more> tag, which truncates the text and creates the <read the rest of this article> link.
I didn’t realize that would take effect in Tag Surfer, too.
Responding to sulz, I think those “old” posts become fresh again when the poster applies a new tag to old material, launching them into a new tag category. -
Yes, Sulz, I’m replying to you. The new blog layout would mean that a new comment on an old thread would be on the Dashboard, right? I don’t mind commenting on “stale” entries and find sometimes that it can bring them back to life.
-
I’d be happy to have just the linked titles and tags part of the posts. I can usually tell from them whether or not the article will be of interest to me or not.
-
Let’s get back to what we agree on:
I love Tag Surfer, but I wonder if it could be better.
REALLY LONG POSTS can be a chore to scroll through and hog way too much of the available space.
SHORT POSTS can be read in their entirety, discouraging visitors from actually clicking through to the blog unless they feel compelled to comment.
Could Tag Surfer be more of a tease, like Tag pages, and only offer up the first few lines of a post, to encourage click-through for blogs that get to the point quickly,
WITHOUT DEPENDING ON BLOGGERS to elect the <more> tag?Somehow this functionality is available to build the individual Tag pages, where only the first few lines of a post appear.
-
I didn’t realize that would take effect in Tag Surfer, too.
At least i think it does. :)
David, there’s a way to do it. WP uses two seperate functions to display a post: the_content which displays the entire post and the_excerpt which only displays the first 100 characters or so.
Maybe if we were to send in feedback with a link to this thread and make this suggestion…
-
Absolutely.
I think a majority would agree. Display just the_excerpt in Tag Surfer.
An already wonderful feature will be very much improved!
I’ll send the feedback now.

rain: ah, now i get you. actually even in the old db you can receive new comments from old posts, the recent comments feature then is time-dependent. i too don’t mind receiving new comments on past posts, but it’s something i don’t like to do myself on others unless it’s something i feel strongly about.
-
You might want to suggest that as well. There are plugins that will close off the ability to make comments on older posts. Me personally I don’t mind.
-
As soon as I see an incoming comment on an old post my ears prick up and I hiss … ssss. This is because the only comments on old posts I have ever received were from the porno toy folks who seemed to be trying to sell me items I don’t need such as rabbit vibrators !? penis extenders and the like.
