Improving the thread tagging feature
-
Hi there,
As a volunteer here at the Forum, I often try adding appropriate tags to the threads.
Many times though I find it hard to know, what is the best tag to use. Often one topic could use different variations of a tag as well, and I am not sure which one to add. This is of course can lead to a less organized tag library, which also means less useful tag library.
For example: lets say a member asks about “adding an image”. For this topic I can imagine multiple variations of basically the same tag. Like: “image”, “add image”, “adding image”, etc. (My example is weak, but you get the idea. :D)
It would be super helpful to have a “live” feedback about the already existing tag library, as I am typing. It could suggest tags (based on what I typed) and also tell me how many times a certain tag was used.
I believe this would eventually lead to a more organized tag library, and an even more helpful tag system.
Hope this is a helpful feature idea for the Forum. Keep up the good work! :)

Hi there,
Thanks for the suggestion. This would be a great idea, I agree, and it’s something that has been on our wishlist for quite some time.
However, something like this would need to be coded from scratch, and we simply don’t have the developer time available for creating those types of enhancements for the forums.
And it really doesn’t matter that much if we have multiple tags for the same issue. The primary purpose of tags is to make it easier for people to find threads about a particular issue, and that still works even if there’s multiple tags :)
From time to time staff does try to clean up the tags a bit and merge related tags, but we don’t consider it a high priority. Making sure everyone who posts in this forum receives a fast and accurate answer is much more important :)

I like your idea @csabarakasz and I would like to offer a different approach to this. Brainstorming session anyone?! :)
Maybe even have a few popular tags readily available, either as the “HTML tags and attributes” area below the thread reply field or with a drag and drop functionality.
Having search results show-up as one is typing might lead to varying outcomes, but having tags ready to use would probably avoid amassing variations of them also.
