In Hexa, how to I create custom hexagons?

In this theme, hexagons are assigned to a post to distinguish between text posts, images, links, etc.

However, I would like to make find some way to have a categorical hexagon supersede the assigned one.

For example, if I have a considerable number of posts that deal with honey and is assigned that category, I’d like to have a hexagon with a honeycomb on it. Or, if I made posts about the Democratic/Republican Party, I’d like a color-coded hexagon with the logos of the respective parties. etc.

How would I do this? The categories are easy to make, as are the logos and hexagons. I’m just not sure how to one automatically assigned to a post on the front page/the page of the post.
