In Koi theme, I need to make the two first posts look SEPARATE from the rest — possibly eliminating

  • Unknown's avatar

    Could you please help me figure out how to make my first two static (sticky) posts stand apart from the blog which begins below them. I have changed the date, but would rather have no date on these, and I need some kind of visual device to let readers know that the blog actually begins below these two. I have the Koi theme which doesn’t have a method for doing what I want, so I’ll need to add html code somehow.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Oh, I should have added that it would be important to contain the TITLE of those stickies in the scheme

    Hi!

    One option would be to change the background color on the posts that you want to highlight. For example, we could do something like this:

    http://d.pr/i/19WYS

    However, that background change would not include the background behind the title. The best option would be to use Custom CSS, which would requite the Custom Design upgrade included in the Premium bundle.

    Currently, you’re using the 10GB Space Upgrade ($20/yr), VideoPress ($60/yr), and two custom domains ($26/yr a piece). The Premium bundle is only $99 a year and includes all of those upgrades plus the Custom Design upgrade. If you’d like, I can add that to your account temporarily while we test out the CSS changes. If you end up deciding to use the CSS, we can swap out your current upgrades for the discounted bundle. Would that work?

    Hi Jeremy —

    Thank you for responding! Yes! Let’s try that. Does that price include the help you will give me?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Yes! Let’s try that.

    Awesome! I added it to your account as a quick test. You should see it here:

    Does that price include the help you will give me?

    That’s free! :)

    I took a first pass at how we could differentiate the two first blog posts. I removed the date and the tag/category links as well as turned the background white. Can you just put this under Appearance -> Customize -> CSS?

    .post-13269 .post-date, .post-13269 .post-data, .post-13269 .sd-content, .post-16203 .post-date, .post-16203 .post-data, .post-16203 .sd-content {
    	display: none;

    }
    .post-13269 .entry-content, .post-16203 .entry-content {
    	background-color: white;
    }

    This is just a first go! Let me know specifically what you had in mind.

    Hi Jeremy —

    -This is a good start. EXCELLENT that you could remove the date.
    -I’ll need the “edit” there, for when and if I need to alter things.
    -Do the tags work even though they don’t show? This is what I need.
    -White is a bit harsh. Maybe the tan/gold you see in the sidebar? Or maybe a slightly lighter or darker hue of the gray like on the rest of the blog?
    I’m in and out a lot, so working on this will be a catch-as-catch-can thing — hope that’s okay. Janet

    I used #D6D6D6 for the color. I’ll keep toying with colors to see what might work best. How do I “save” — this would work for now, until we come up with something better? Janet

    Hey Janet!

    I’ll need the “edit” there, for when and if I need to alter things.

    No problem. Just switch out everything to this code:

    .post-13269 .post-date, .post-13269 .posttag, .post-13269 .postauthor, .post-13269 .postcategory, .post-13269 .sd-content, .post-16203 .post-date, .post-16203 .posttag, .post-16203 .postauthor, .post-16203 .postcategory, .post-16203 .sd-content {
    	display: none;
    }

    .post-13269 .entry-content, .post-16203 .entry-content {
    	background-color: #D6D6D6;
    }

    Do the tags work even though they don’t show? This is what I need.

    Yep! Your posts will still appear on tag pages. However, the links to the tags just won’t show on your first two posts.

    White is a bit harsh. Maybe the tan/gold you see in the sidebar? Or maybe a slightly lighter or darker hue of the gray like on the rest of the blog?

    If you’d like, you can just edit the hex code (as you’ve already done). This will allow you to play around with the colors to find one that works!

    How do I “save” — this would work for now, until we come up with something better?

    Once you edit the CSS under Appearance > Customize > CSS, just click the “Save and Publish” option in the top right-hand corner of the menu (shown here: http://d.pr/i/1duhx). That will activate the CSS and save it so you can continue to modify it in the future.

    Also, do you think you’ll be sticking with the Premium bundle? If so, I’ll do a bit of cleanup on your Upgrades (remove individual upgrades in lieu of bundle). Just let me know!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Jeremy —

    Thank you for your help — we did it!

    Is the Premium bundle the one that includes the custom stuff we just did? In that case, yes, I’ll stick with the Premium bundle and could you do the bit of “cleanup”? Thank you!

    Again, thank you for fixing this the way I wanted it! Janet

  • Unknown's avatar

    Oh, actually I’d like to try the background as you did it in the link you sent me in your first reply to me (I tried copying and pasting it here, but it won’t paste!) It would block out the first two posts as one unit, including the titles — rather than having the two blocks as it stands now. I’m thinking this might be clearer to readers. What do you think? Janet

    Yep! The Custom Design upgrade (that allows us to make these CSS changes) is included in the Premium bundle. I went ahead and did a bit of cleanup. Basically, I removed the 10GB upgrade and the VideoPress upgrade because they’re both included in the Premium bundle. Then, I bundled the domain coyoteyipps.com with your Premium bundle and renewed it (since the Premium bundle includes a domain).

    You can see the aftermath here:

    https://yipps.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=my-upgrades

    Going forward, you’ll just need to pay the following:

    – $26 to renew coyotecoexistence.net

    – $99 to renew the Premium bundle and included domain coyoteyipps.com

    Oh, actually I’d like to try the background as you did it in the link you sent me in your first reply to me (I tried copying and pasting it here, but it won’t paste!) You’re referring to this link, correct?

    http://d.pr/i/19WYS

    That’s actually just a partial screenshot illustrating how we could turn the text background to black and use white lettering to separate the posts out rather than CSS. The posts would still fit in your normal flow of posts. It would look like this:

    http://d.pr/i/1dlAM

    That paragraph is an example. We would just basically turn the background on text components to black. Due to the spacing, I don’t think this would look quite as good as the coloring we have in place now. The current coloring affects the entire block whereas the workaround I original mentioned only blacked out the area behind text. I just initially showed that option because it didn’t require CSS. Does that help to clarify?

    Ah, yes, okay — I get it. Let’s stick with what we have. I really like it. Thank you so much, Jeremy! Have a great weekend! Janet
