In the Reusable Blocks Editor

The Export as JSON feature doesn’t work. I would like to see what it looks like, so I can potentially edit it in Notepad ++ to my satisfaction and re-upload it. I have found inconsistencies in the way the formatting is presented. Thanks.

  • Hi there!

I’m not sure I understand. What’s the address of the site you’re working on?

Please note that these forums are for WordPress.com hosted sites only. If your site is using the open-source WordPress.org software, we won’t be able to help you out and you’ll want to seek help at these forums:

In the Blocks editor, there’s a place for export as JSON. Since I’m on mobile, screenshots will be provided later.

  • Ok, I can confirm that the highlighted link doesn’t do anything in Firefox 72.0.2, Safari 13.0.5, and Chrome 79.0.3945.130: https://d.pr/i/JTceTd

It does work under self-hosted WordPress.org software 5.3.2, so there appears to be a glitch or conflict in our implementation.

I have let our developers know and we’ll let you know when we have a solution!

I didn’t expect that answer. Thanks for that. While you are at it, since the idea is to use the block editor, why does it automatically convert to custom HTML when all you need is the visual editor. To change is convoluted and more steps not subject to a level of automation from IFTTT.

  • The editor has two modes, Visual and Code.

Everything on the web is code-based, so that will always be around.

As you work in Visual, you can switch to Code if you want to fine-tune things, but you can switch back to Visual any time: https://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpress-editor/#document-settings

I get that part, I just would rather stay in normal mode, then when I get it the way I want it, then go to the blocks editor. Still an immature product right now. I know it’s in its 1st generation or so, but I must have been expecting true WYSIWYG. All I want is consistency, and it’s not there yet. But we continue.

Looking forward to the bug fix on the blocks section.

  • Can you clarify what normal mode is here?

I just would rather stay in normal mode

  • OK, I was confused about this this:

I just would rather stay in normal mode, then when I get it the way I want it, then go to the blocks editor.

The block editor has a visual mode as well as a code mode. Do you mean you want to use the visual block editor then switch to the code editor if needed, or is there something else you have in mind, like switching from classic to block?

What I was referring to is when I get an automatic draft post, from say Microsoft On The Issues via IFTTT, it comes in as classic mode. The ask to switch to the blocks editor mode. I want to and do sometimes, but I’m looking for a template type near auto-post on stories I find interesting and set up based on my IFTTT profile.

I know how to make the switch, I would like a way to force the blocks editor mode on all posts that come in like this.

continuing on that part, and this may ultimately require a paid account to do this, but I have a few “franchises” meaning regularly posted content, like The Mouse vs The Python. Since it’s not my original material, it only gets a few sections with a link for more. It posts to me full pages.

  • Just to make sure I understand, are you saying you’re using IFTTT to source content and then re-post it to your blog? Can you provide more details on the exact process you’re following, and exactly what is not working as expected?

Your site at nclargegeek.wordpress.com is set to the block editor, so all new posts created on that site are created using that editor, no matter what method you’re using to create the post.

Is the content perhaps being added inside the Classic Block, inside the block editor? If you’re using a third-party service like IFTTT or XML-RPC to post to your site I can see that happening:

In that case it’s a big chunk of text or HTML content being inserted into the post at one time, and the editor wouldn’t necessarily know which blocks to convert the content into, especially if it’s content being reposted from another website, and which could include HTML markup not supported by the standard blocks. So it picks the classic block as a fall-back option, if that makes sense.

That makes perfect sense to me. I haven’t thought of IFTTT or XML-RPC (which I thought was a loophole closed years ago, when I was direct posting from MS Word) as an external source. My guess is that MS PowerApps is similar.

I do have content using IFTTT that attempts to automate the draft process. Since I can’t get it the way I want it out of the box, this is acceptable.

It does come in the classic format, even if it’s just a WordPress bookmarklet or “Add To Any” that uses the old-style URL scan method.

I’m going to 😴 and look forward to the JSON Blocks bug being fixed. GN from UTC-5.
