Inaccurate notification icon

Lately the red notification icon [star, letter, etc..] has been totally unreliable.
For example if I received a comment and the red icon came on and I review the comment, etc…the icon will go away for a while and then return, but there won’t be any new comments.I have never had this problem before. Also I used to get a red icon with a white cross in it letting me know that my followers had received notification about a new post on my blog. That icon hardly ever appears now.
Any insight into this issue or help would be greatly appreciated.

WordPress.com and WordPress.org have different log-ins and run different versions of themes with same names. If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

Can you please try clearing out your browser cache?
Do you also encounter this issue in a different browser? for example Internet Explorer or Google Chrome?

Many thanks – I cleared the cache & I think that will help. Should have done this before – I was just surprised that it never did this before & then all of a sudden.
That doesn’t address why I do not get the ‘cross’ notification symbol when I post a new blog entry, and my followers are notified.
Any idea what that might be?

Do you encounter the issue with the cross notification symbol in other browsers too?
Otherwise please send us a screenshot of the page where you’re seeing this? You can upload the screenshot to your blog’s media library.

As I mentioned above, clearing the cache took care of that issue, I guess it is a Firefox issue rather than a WP one. A bit annoying since it did not used to happen.
The other thing that concerns me though is that I do not get the ‘cross’ icon notifying me that my blog followers have been notified when I post a new blog entry.
What puzzles me most about that is that since that has happened I have a significant drop off in daily visitors.
I have uploaded a screen shot to my media library pointing to what I am talking about. Of course, since I no longer get the ‘cross’ icon, I could not take a screen shot of it.
Your help with this would be greatly appreciated.

To clarify, that cross icon you mention is a notification when someone new follows your blog. It’s not a notification that your followers got their email update of a new post. That just happens every time you publish a post – you’re not notified of it in any way.
You also receive a toolbar notification if someone likes, comments on, or reblogs one of your posts.
I took a look at your stats and the fluctuations you’re seeing are normal. We have some tips on traffic building here that might be a help:

I must note however that I used to get the cross icon whenever I published a new post, and it used to say something like this: “256 people are following your post….’
The wording is not exactly right, but I am sure I did NOT get the cross icon only when I had a new follower.

Hi Christian – That’s odd. Perhaps such a notification was displayed for a time in some earlier version of our notification system, but I don’t recall seeing it. If you see it again, a screenshot would be great. :)

Thanks for the quick response, if it crops up again I will try and do a screen shot. Unfortunately, those kind of ‘pop ups’ usually disappear once I click on my ‘snipping tool.’

After a long ‘hiatus’ I just received the ‘cross notification’ after a new posting. I uploaded a couple of screen shots to my media library. I would appreciate any info you have.

Hi Christian,
I took a look at your screenshots, and that notification is to tell you that someone new is following your blog. The message in the notifications dropdown will tell you the total number of followers on your blog, but the notification itself is because you have one or more new followers.
