Inactivity

Does WORDPRESS have any policies in place that I can read that have rules against inactive sites or accounts? I’d like to leave it for 20 y. then come back all should be in place.

While there is no written policy that I could find, from a practical standpoint, web technologies continuously evolve. There is no guarantee that your WordPress.com website will be the same 20 years from now or that WordPress.com or the web itself will exist or exist in its current format.

From the standpoint of domains or upgrades you’ve purchased for your WordPress.com website, you’d need to continue to pay for the upgrade in order to maintain the associated services. Here, too, there’s no guarantee that said upgrades or plans wouldn’t change during that period.

Lastly, WordPress.com has recently announced a 100-year plan (at a hefty price) should that interest you https://wordpress.com/blog/2023/08/25/introducing-the-100-year-plan/

I hope that helps, but I’ve also flagged your topic for Staff input.

  • Hey there! So, we did some digging.

First of all, @2020testjj is right: we’ll generally try to keep your content intact, though the tech that displays it can evolve over time. And I do want to point out our Terms of Service does state we may reclaim accounts or urls that are not being used.

A few things to keep in mind:

    • If you buy a domain, you’ll want to be sure you don’t let it expire, and be sure to transfer rather than canceling if you want to move it elsewhere. It will stop working, and someone else could purchase the name.
    • If you buy a plan that uses plugins, then stop paying for that plan, your site can revert to a pre-plugin state. It’s best to get in touch with support so we can help you downgrade gracefully as needed.

I hope this helps! Let us know if you have questions!

Thank you @supernovia! I completely overlooked that part in the ToS, Section 13. Termination. Good to know.

TBH, my eyes may have glazed over by the time I got there because there was a lot of sections in between that didn’t relate to a simple free WordPress.com website. :) Since we have a table of contents block available, maybe it could be added to the top of the ToS for quick linking and reference? Thanks again.

That’s a great idea, and thank you for suggesting it. We’ll relay it to our Documentation team.
