Inappropriate advert placing

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi

I’m fine with adverts being placed at the end of posts, or in the side bar area, as I realize this is how wordpress fund free web space for users.

However, adverts are now being placed actually within my blog posts (ie between paragraphs), which I’m fairly sure borders on interfering with copyright as it’s adding content to my work. Who do I contact about this please? (I’m aware I can pay for an upgrade to advert-free, but that’s not what I want as I’m on a very low income – I just want to clarify what can and can’t be done to alter content I have written).

    Many thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

We do occasionally insert ads between paragraphs in post and page content on free sites, yes. The only way to prevent this from happening is to upgrade to a paid plan and remove all advertising from the site.

Thanks for the reply. Surely this breaches copyright law as you are changing the content of the article written by the author by inserting material into the article from a party other than the author.

It’s one thing to place adverts on a free site after the end of the article, or in the sidebar, and another thing entirely to place adverts inside a post which is the copyright of the author.

Can the law be clarified by the WordPress team please? Can they explain how changing someone’s written work doesn’t break copyright law?

You made about 10 months also problems about the ads in the right side bar on a Free wordpress.com website, https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/adverts-help/.
On every other blogging platform offering free service, you’ll get ads one way or another. As ads are such a problem to you, you should consider upgrading to a paid plan.

  • A copyright violation occurs when someone takes something you wrote, and re-publishes it without your permission or tries to pass it off as their own. That is not happening here.

We are also not changing the content of your articles. We are merely inserting advertisements, which are clearly visible as such, inbetween your content.

I know it doesn’t always look good, and can understand that it frustrates you – it frustrates me if I visit a website and every couple of paragraphs I have to scroll past an ad to continue reading. But this is a common way to display ads online, and a way we also occasionally display ads on free WordPress.com sites.

I’m sorry you find the fact both I, and many of my readers, have brain injuries and can’t cope with flashing images in adverts offensive staartmees. You also appear irritated that as already explained I’m on a very low income and it’s difficult to pay my heating and food bills some days, let alone anything else, so again I’m sorry my poverty also offends you.

Thanks for the polite reply kokkieh. As I, and many of my readers, have brain injuries the adverts in the middle of blog posts are difficult and more than just annoying as they would be for non-disabled readers. Obviously disabilities aren’t something WordPress are taking on board.

We’ll have to agree to disagree on what constitutes copyright infringement :-)

  • We run ads on free sites to keep them free: https://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/

If you see an offensive ad, please do report it via the “Report This Ad” link below the ad, or by submitting the form at https://en.support.wordpress.com/about-these-ads/

To remove ads, simply purchase any paid plan: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
