Incoming Links Glitch?

  • Unknown's avatar

How is this working FOR all of us? It’s mucking up my ability to see who is actually purposefully linking to me. That isn’t working for me. It is actually slowing me down.

Telling us that it is known and that it has been discussed already isn’t helpful, and telling us to take it up w/ Google but not giving us any recourse to do so in that tone is a little rude, frankly. I can’t find any discussion more recent than this about it, or that is remotely relevant during the time this has been happening. I haven’t heard back from support. The incoming links are a useful tool in networking my blog, something I use to broaden my readership and further the discussion of relevant topics. When we contact support, it tells us to check the forums first to answer our questions. This discourse isn’t helpful, but it is frustrating.

I can tell you it has nothing to do w/ the Related Posts feature, b/c I get it from Typepad, Blogger, and LiveJournal blogs as well.

Well, now I’m not going to tell you how it’s working for you.

Hi again rain – If it’s something working *for* us, then I can’t see why WP would want to nullify it since they seem quite willing to continually try to provide us with better service and features. Is there a Google mole reading in the WP forums that would cause you to worry about Google finding out about this discussion and nullifying something that’s good for us? If that’s the case, I’m going to directly complain about Google more. ;-) And you know… if those Facebook guys have a mole here too, I’m going to make sure I fit in a few digs about them also. ;-)

    Seriously though…

I can see how a lot of frustrated people would be unwilling to take an answer like “I think I know what’s going on but frankly as I think it’s working FOR all of us, I’m not going to put it out here so Google or WP can nullify it” and just accept it at face value. When people are frustrated and no one shares any information with them, it makes them distrust… and eventually become angry. *Someone* should throwing out a bone to the many people who are frustrated about this already. I’m not saying it should be you or any of the other volunteers here to do so, but I can also see how others would have a hard time to just go on what you posted with no other info at all.

I think people just want *something* to go on… or even to know that the problem might be solved soon. I think good folks can be patient if they’re not kept totally in the dark, but that’s just my opinion I guess. Personally, though I haven’t done anything drastically different from what I’ve been doing all along and done ok with, lately I’ve had trouble staying on page 1 of google and my traffic has gone down so I too, would be one of those people really interested in how whatever is going on has ‘helped’ us.

Hey guys, this is rather interesting to me. I only recently started experimenting with my wordpress.com blog and saw how the incoming links widget works. Up until these last few days the wodget on my dashboard on my regular website has NEVER worked. Maybe one of you can clue me in to what I need to do to tell google about my regular blog which is located at eternalseven.com to get that plugin to work?

    Thanks!

    Fracas I agree entirely.

Further, it’s frankly absurd that some of the volunteers on this thread are defending WordPress’s failure to communicate with the people who drive their business, ie everyone who has a WordPress blog. It’s simply unprofessional and discourteous.

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry, to clarify: WordPress’s behaviour is “simply unprofessional and discourteous”

  • Unknown's avatar

I didn’t see it as the volunteers ‘defending’ anything… answering questions here is a (often) thankless job and I know if they had a better answer, they’d give one. I’ve been here a long time and know that for the most part, the volunteers will absolutely call WP on certain issues… express their wishes for more information or notice… etc. After all, when people are frustrated, it is the volunteers that get the flack… even though they’re not able to actually make anything different!

I was just explaining to raincoaster why I thought giving more info (about knowledge she or others might have that came from other than the WP folks) was better than not.

I do agree that it’s time WP shared *some* info about what’s happening with us.

Ages ago I set up a search for my own domain in Google. This is a feed search and I get that feed.
There are two people who link to my blog in their sidebar and whenever these two people post it shows as a link to my site – even though they do not link in their post.
There are other sites that link to me in their sidebar and when they post I see nothing.

All blogs involved are not here at wordpress.com
All blogs happen to using different versions of WordPress

So if I’m out to point any finger, it’s at Google.

  • Unknown's avatar

If you want the actual feed here it is. It shows 5 links. My feed reader has 30+. And all are from the same search.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok… so does anyone know what might be going on with google, or what we could do about it?

Mark – (lol) We tend to think you folks have every answer there is, so understandably, we’re shell-shocked when you don’t have one.

I would like to defend wordpress. WordPress is a positive experience for me and I wish I had never left( my house was broken in to and the sheriff thought my blog led the crooks to my new home–wasn’t the case but I closed it down too fast and lost some pretty awesome stuff). So then I left wordpress to see if I could find a better place to blog. I also wanted my name back–which I have been able to do but didn’t know that at the time. So the name flowergardengirl is out there under a gazillion different names because nothing worked. One host didn’t tell you until you were registered that all your viewers had to be members before they could post a reply.

And every time you change urls—you lose the links. This meant a lot of reposting pics! What a nightmare. Some host don’t show stats—or have any kind of customer support–or have extremely slow up time–or slow posting changes—or hold your info hostage–or you name it. We have it good at wordpress!

I can tell you that every host is in competition to be no.1
Google is constantly stirring the pot and creating clever ways to direct traffic their way. This is good and bad for us but ultimately probably good? I suppose?

The pros here can not possibly give you or I an answer that we would even remotely understand and answering our questions would take up valuable time needed to solve the ongoing constant changes in the blog arena.

I know all this because in a few short months–I’ve been everywhere trying to find the best service and views. I have had more problems than is fair to any blogger giving it their all every day. I even thought having a domain name would be the end all. It wasn’t and is actually worse unless you are a computer expert and give it your full attention. I gave up the domain and said—let someone else deal with the issues.

So it is what it is. A monster of an ongoing problem that will show its ugly head often and more often. The problem will never stay the same and rest assured…the techs and computer experts are working around the clock to stay ahead of the next….problem.

Be of good cheer and calm down….unless you want to hire a whole crew of techo geeks for you only. This is the best it gets. I belong to several blog forums and I hear some kind of complaint from every blogger about issues with —whatever—you name it—-and yes…google wants to control it all.

I don’t blame google. They are a business trying just as hard as everyone else and being rather successful out front at the moment. That certainly doesn’t mean that wordpress isn’t working any less or desires less for us. It is simply a constant state of affairs.

Best wishes to all of you blogging and trying to run an internet business. I know it’s frustrating. The good Lord knows I’ve been extremely frustrated over the last few months. Did I say extremely? maybe that wasn’t strong enough!

Your patience should be an example to all of us.

@fracas, I can understand people’s frustration with my enigmatic remarks, but the last two times I clarified, it resulted in “fixes” that lowered people’s Google pagerank and Technorati Authority. Given that, I hope people can understand why I refuse to clarify, except privately. Anyone who wants clarification is welcome to email me at raincoaster at gmail dot com.

I actually think this is a good thing because I have discovered
more websites that are linked to me by blog roll & articles
as for before I only got links that were directly in a article.

  • Unknown's avatar

Teck07, heh I was thinking the same thing. And if someone links to me, I’ll find that in technorati so this didn’t really bother me.

But I just wanted to note that even those that don’t have me on their blogroll show up in my “incoming links” just because I had commented on their blog. So, I think a link of any kind (even if off the blogroll) will show up there.

    @Vivianpage

I have a wordpress.com blog and a regular blog. The answer to my question was actually really simple, all I needed to do was notify google of my blog.

I’ve been following this community since that response and overall I must say I’m rather disappointed. I’ll direct all my future questions at the .org domain.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m not sure why you are getting bent out of shape for being directed to the proper forum. There is a legitimate reason for separate forums because the software is different. You asked about plugins which we don’t use here at wordpress.COM. And staff here has said we are NOT to answer .ORG questions.

    Glad you got your answer.
