Incoming links question
-
I’m slightly confused here, so I’ll bite and ask a stupid question – what determines whether a link will show up in the “Incoming Links” section of my dashboard?
I do understand that it’s based on the Google Blog Search and not a WordPress feature – does that mean that someone has to actually search/find one of my links to have it show up? For example, I happen to know that several other blogs have mine listed in their blogroll, but the link itself never shows up, just when someone clicks it. I also recently found that someone at Better Homes and Gardens linked to one of my blog posts way back in January – the only reason I know this is because someone actually clicked the link – not because the link showed up.
I’m confused. Any input would be greatly appreciated!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello there,
Incoming links has been broken for a long time. I do not use it.
Search string format to type into Google (note there is no pace following the colon)
link:example.comSearch string for your blog to type into Google
link:http://psychmamma.wordpress.com/Search results for your blog > http://tinyurl.com/4mple3v
The results display all the sites linking to your site. Note that you can also track the total number at the top to see if links are increasing or decreasing.
You can also use Yahoo site explorer > http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/
Site Explorer allows you to explore all the web pages indexed by Yahoo! Search. View the most popular pages from any site, dive into a comprehensive site map, and find pages that link to that site or any page.Or you can use seo moz open site explorer for a detailed analysis http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/

OOPS! In your case you will have to replace this “http://psychmamma.wordpress.com/” with the URL for your own blog when foing a Google search

I noticed today an incoming link on my dashboard, it was on a blog that I had commented on, and it says
“… linked here saying, “Costco is the largest membership wholesaler club i …”
What exactly does it mean, if anything since you noted that the incoming links was broken?

Please read the sticky post at the head of this forum https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/regarding-referrer-spam?replies=1

I don’t believe it is referrer spam, especially since it is under the heading on the dashboard called incoming links, and like I said it was from a blog that was freshly pressed and I had commented on.
-
Google changed something and now we’re seeing Incoming Links reported from places we’ve commented who are using the Recent Comments widget (Follow links! Yay! Everyone should use that widget) or who have blogrolled us.

Ack! I did the google search, and found that a certain site (Fivefilters, no link) yanked a full post of mine and republished it!
So.. thanks Timethief for the detailed instructions – you never know what you’ll find out there on the internet.

Yep, when the Recent Comments widget started, the links were Follow. Then they were No Follow, and now they appear to be Follow.
Also, links from this forum are Follow, I believe.

@realegion
Yahoo site explorer and seo moz open site explorer are third party sites. I find their tools to be intuitive and easy to use and I doubt that wordpress.com will provide instructions for their use in the support docs. But you are correct I do think Staff need to update this entry in support docs. http://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/#incoming-links -
are incoming links automatically detected and shown by wordpress? is there a widget i need to use for this? if so, i can’t find it. are incoming links considered trackback links?
-
@akh0310: Incoming links are part of stats. It’s not a widget. Please refer to the link timethief gave in her answer right above your question.
Trackbacks are not exactly the same thing. More details here:
