Incompatible number 'visitors' and countries in my stats

  • Unknown's avatar

My stats show that I have had 15 views from 8 different countries but I have had just 1 visitor. I understand that ‘views’ generally exceed ‘visitors’ since the latter often view more than one post, but how can one visitor be in 8 different countries at once?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Join the club. I’ve been complaining about missing visitors since yesterday. This has been happening with growing regularity.

They usually don’t admit there is a problem but once they “check into it” it usually gets fixed.

I’m concerned that my totals for yesterday will never get fixed.

If we keep posting here, eventually someone will fix the problem.

    Hi there,
Our stats are page view stats. They are not real time stats and the countries, views and viewers numbers take hours to update. Provided you are logged in when visiting, your own views are not recorded on any public blog you registered. http://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/

Please do not assume that everyone who clicks a like button actually reads the post on your blog because odds are they may not.

Also note that those who follow your blog in the Reader or by email don’t have to click into the blog unless they wish to.

And they can even comment without clicking into the blog either.

Likes and shares and comments and reblogs and follows are not page views. In fact, likes, shares, comments and reblogs are completely misleading when you are talking about page view stats. Your followers and anyone with a WordPress.com/Gravatar account who is logged into WordPress.com can “follow” your blog, “like”, “share” and “reblog” your posts in several locations such as the Reader, without ever clicking into your blog and creating a single page view stat.

Logged in visitors using a mobile can read the full post without creating a page view stat. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/wordpresscom-reader-show-full-text?replies=31#post-1373606

You can control the length of the entry sent out on your RSS feed here > Settings > Reading. Choose the “summary” setting for your RSS feed rather than to “full text”. That will compel followers who are not using mobiles to click into the blog to read the full post which will create a page view stat.

Not correct, at least in my case.

The problem is with WordPress’s counter. My visitors stopped updating yesterday afternoon. I had well over 100 visitors per day for the week and as expected had around 50 by 4:00 yesterday afternoon. It stayed there the rest of the day and NEVER updated as we’re told will happen.

So far today, I have 27 views from 3 countries and only one visitor. That one visitor was there 5 hours ago.

It seems like the visitor count should have updated sometime in the last 17 hours.

    Hi timethief,
I’m a bit of a fan of yours after reading several of your well-written responses to questions. However, I can only assume your last response was an all-purpose response. I don’t see how it relates to my problem which has nothing to do with likes (no one ever likes my posts!), nor comments, nor shares. My question was very specific: how can the number of countries my visitors come from possibly exceed the number of visitors to my blog? It appears that a single person is travelling around the world with the express purpose of viewing my blog from several different and mutually remote countries.

    @theunrecordedman
Yes that’s a copy and paste answer because in almost every case when people reports stats issues they are new and don’t comprehend that virtually everything can be done by readers with out clicking into the blog. Not to worry as this thread is tagged for Staff like all the others. Hopefully, people will post only into a single thread. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when Staff respond and please be patient while waiting.

    Hi there!

@theunrecordedman – I just took a look at your stats for yesterday and it looks like we’re reporting 18 views and 14 visitors. Part of the discrepancy between these numbers is explained in timethief’s response. People are able to view your posts through the Reader without visiting your site.

There will always be a level of inaccuracy with stats reporting. And the type of stats we report will not update in live time, but will generally be up to date by the next morning.

In looking at your stats. I don’t see anything that would suggest an issue with our stats tracking.

@cbbrown3 – I’ll respond in your other thread. It’s best to keep all of your reports in one place so that we can see all of the information about your issue. We won’t see your comments on other peoples threads attached to your support request, so we’ll miss any addition information given in other threads.

    Shawna,

Thanks for the response. So, you know when you have a pain and as soon as you get to the doctor’s surgery the pain is mysteriously gone? Well, same with my stats. Most of today they have shown just one visitor while the views and countries they were viewed from increased. That was how things were until an hour ago, with 18 views and just one visitor from 9 countries. Suddenly (now the day is over) ‘visitors’ has changed to 14. Mystery.

I totally understand. This is what I mean by the delay in updating. Our stats aren’t tracked and updated in real time. So your stats from day to day will not be ‘finalized’ until several hours after the next day has already begun.

    Does that make sense?

If you ever see that your stats several days later are still looking incorrect, you should definitely ping us because that’s more likely to be an issue with our stats monitoring. But for these shorter term delays (less than a day), it’s likely that your stats just haven’t updated yet and if you give it a few hours everything will update accordingly.

Let me know if you have any other questions about your stats!
