Incomplete Transfer to Self Host

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m writing on behalf of a client.

I’m trying to transfer to a self-host. It looks like the XML is complete, but I’m having problems importing the information having tried various incarnations of the WordPress Importer. The biggest issue is galleries in posts are not being transferred properly.

The best way would be if I could get a mySQL dump of the database. I understand that this is possible.

Also I would like followers and stats to be migrated.

Could you let me know if you could provide the above, I’d be very grateful.

    Hi Chris,

We’ve done imports on WordPress.com using mySQL database dumps in situations where folks coming from self-hosted sites and do not have access to their .xml files, but we do not supply mySQL database dumps.

I’d recommend checking the specific galleries that did not transfer properly and make sure the images are marked as “attached” to their post or page. Media not attached to a post or page won’t get transferred. After attaching any files, re-run the export/import.

Another common cause of media not transferring is if PHP memory is running out, I’d recommend checking that as well.

Could you please confirm both the WordPress.com URL and self-hosted URL with the Jetpack plugin installed from/to which you need the stats and followers migrated?

    Thanks so much.

The galleries are attached to the posts – I can see that they are marked as ‘attached’.

If I look at the XML it seems they are being exported as attached. So the issue must lie with the importer not importing the galleries correctly.

If you aren’t able to supply the database, I’ll have to look again at the import side.

Unless you had any more ideas.

What I’ll do is hold off the transfer until I’ve got the galleries sorted.

    Thanks so much.

Another thing you can check on the import side is your server’s timeout settings. If they’re too low that might affect larger files.

Let me know here whenever you’re ready for the stats/followers migration.
