We have no control over what is displayed by social l networks like the images that Twitter, Facebook or any other social networks may choose to display, or when they choose to flush their image caches. We really only send them the URL of the post, and they hunt through that for the excerpt and images to include.

You are using a retired theme and the recommendation is to switch to a newer theme that has featured images.

I have never liked the newer version nor found it as easy to use as the old. What mystifies me, is that this “just” happened out of the blue, so it seems –

The major thing I have liked about WordPress is the ease of use. I looked at all your publicizing ideas and they were pretty much tedious and greek to me and solved nothing. I still am getting the incorrect image after four years of doing this with no problems as far as images are concerned. I tried the new improved format and received the same result – and I still say the newer improved way is far inferior to the old. Old is easy and simple. new is complicated and takes a long time.

  • Hi there,

When you share a link on Facebook they save the preview for that link on their system so they don’t need to check your site every time someone shares that same link.

The issue you’re experiencing happens when that preview becomes stuck on Facebook’s end, and they start showing it for new links you share. It has nothing to do with the editor on WordPress.com, and we have no control over it, as it’s something that happens on Facebook’s systems.

The only way to fix it is to force Facebook to clear their cache and re-check your site. You do this via Facebook’s debugger tool that @timethief linked to above.

    http://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug

Open that tool and paste the link for the post showing the wrong image there. Click Debug. That should load a page with a lot of technical info, but also a preview of the post as it will appear when shared on Facebook. This will likely be showing the wrong image, based on what you described above.

At the top, click the Scrape Again or Fetch New Information button. That will force Facebook to re-check your site. You might need to do it a few times before the preview changes, but once it does, the new preview is what will show if you share that post again, and new posts you share going forward should also show the correct images, until something gets stuck on Facebook’s end again.

If this doesn’t work, please reply with a link to the specific post that is not showing the correct image on Facebook so we can take a look.

I went to Facebook debugger, pasted in the blog address that Facebook distorts with an incorrect illustration – and then what ? they don’t change anything. they don’t put in the correct illustration. what was supposed to happen here that does not?

  • My suggestion is to try scraping the URL again once more through the Facebook debugger. It can take a few tries I’ve found.

Once you’ve scraped it, go to your Facebook profile and add the URL to a new status update. Use the return key on your keyboard to create a line space after the URL. This will generate the preview for you with out needing to actually post it.
