Incorrect Publish Date for Posts
-
For two of my past three post the post have been published with a publish date this is prior to the actual publish date. This causes the post to show up in the WordPress reader back din time so my readers don’t see it. Any idea why this is happening?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi davidbstl,
Can you share the names of the two posts where you have noticed this? If you let me know, I’ll be happy to take a closer look.
Thanks!

Here are the two posts:
After posting them and seeing the error I did go back into the dashboard editor and type in the correct post date. This made them show up properly on my home page (and gave the proper date at the top of the post) but they still showed up with older posts in the reader. Right clicking on the post brought up the html code for the post and I saw there is a post date which can’t be changed by the user and this must be what determines it chronological place in the reader.
Please feel free to let me know if there is any other information I can provide that might help.
Thanks,

Hi David,
First, I’ve updated the Reader feed for your site, so those posts should now appear at the correct positions in the Reader.
Second, can you please provide a bit more information on how you created those posts? I see you started working on those posts some time before you published them and made several revisions to the drafts before you eventually published, correct?
Did you use the editor at My Site ->Blog Posts, or the one in WP-Admin to create the drafts? Or one of our apps?
Did you at any point while working on the posts directly change the publication date/time section in the editor?
Did you let it auto-save each time, or did you click the Save option to make sure drafts are saved before leaving the editor each time?

kokkieh,
Below are answers to your questiosn.I create all my post via the dashboard/admin site as shown below in the answer to the first question. I do often start a post several weeks in advance of publishing with multiple edits/revisions and Saves prior to publication. I very, very rarely use the Android app on my Samsung phone to edit because it’s too cumbersome for me. I make too many fat-finger errors.
I’ve been blogging for a little over four years now and these two incidents are the first time (that I remember) I’ve encountered the problem with the Publish Date. One of my followers had the problem too and she advised to wait a few minutes after clicking Save before publishing. I haven’t tried that.
I’ve copied your questions and put my answers under them.

I create and edit all my posts in the DASHBOARD/ADDMIN site: https://d7100itscomplicated.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.phpDid you at any point while working on the posts directly change the publication date/time section in the editor?
No I never changed the publication date while working on the posts. In both cases I did change the date AFTER posting and finding the posting date incorrect. As mentioned that only changed the date that shows up at the top of the post. Somewhere there is another Posting Date that is generated that cannot be edited by the user.Did you let it auto-save each time, or did you click the Save option to make sure drafts are saved before?
Typically during the editing process several auto-saves are generated but I also click the Save option frequently and almost always before leaving the page. Also I frequently click Save right clicking Publish.I hope this information is helpful and I really appreciate the attention you are giving this.

Hi David, how far off were the initial publish dates? Did the happen to correspond to times when you were editing the posts, or were they much earlier than that?
And is there any chance you may have accidentally published these while working on them?
Lastly, can you check the system date/time on your computer to ensure that is correct? I can’t remember whether it applies to wp-admin or not, but it may be worth checking.
I’m wondering as well whether a new privately published post would have the same wrong date difference on it, or whether these two were just flukes.

The posts showed up in the WP Reader 2 to 3 days prior to the actual publish date. And is there any chance you may have accidentally published these while working on them?
I don’t believe so because I am subscribed to my site and get email notifications when I publish and they show up in the WP Reader. That did not happen in these instances.Lastly, can you check the system date/time on your computer to ensure that is correct? Yes my PC’s system date and time are correct.I’m wondering as well whether a new privately published post would have the same wrong date difference on it, or whether these two were just flukes.
I don’t think these were flukes since one of my followers also had the problem. I posted today and it went okay. One thing I did not do that I did last time is that I did not press Save and then Publish within a few seconds of each other. I waited a minute or two after the last save and then Published and everything was normal. Correct date at top of post and correct order on my home page, and correct order on the WP Reader. Also the Reader is indicating correct elapsed time from post. -

It sounds like the problem might be related to Publishing while the Save action is still busy, though I’m not able to replicate that.
But it is also not really necessary to click Save Draft at all right before you publish a post – that’s only required if you want to save a draft that’s in progress and that you plan to come back to later. Clicking Publish on a finished draft will automatically apply any unsaved changes as well, so please try that with your next post.

Thanks that’s good to know and going forward I’ll not do that. Hopefully that will take care of the problem.
