Increase borders of Expound Theme

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

    I want to make bigger the borders of my theme, now there are like 3 fingers between the window of my theme and the border of the navigator, 3 fingers ofgrey background.

    How can I increase this borders? In the customize menu, which appears at the right, there was a CSS option, but it has disappeared :/

    Thanks!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    You mean you want to make the theme narrower? I don’t see why you’d want to do this.
    The theme is centered in relation to the browser window, so the amount of grey background you see left and right isn’t fixed: it depends on your screen resolution. My screen is 1680×1050, so I see about 8cm of grey left and right. On a 1024 screen and on mobile devices you’ll see about 1cm only (which also means you shouldn’t put those icons in the background).

    The CSS editor is part of a paid upgrade called Custom Design. Anyone can try out the editor in the live preview screen though. If the CSS item is missing from the blue menu, you can make it appear by going to Appearance > Customize > Custom Design and clicking the “Try Now” button.

    However, I agree with justpi that you may not want to make the change because it’s normal for different screens to display different amounts of the background depending on display resolution.

    http://mundoexportar.com/ looks great on Expound btw!!!

    Thanks for the answer, the problem is that the menu bar is too short and I want to add more “items” or options. Now if I put another item on in, it will appear down the first 1, on a second line of menu
    and i dont like the style

    Ex:

    NOTICIAS|COMERCIO EXTERIOR|PRECIOS|TRANSPORT…..|CONTACT
    [X]New tab[x]

    But i think that few weeks im going to upgrade to .org so I will choose a better theme.

    Thanks for all guys

    Aha. That’s a different problem than what you first wrote. First of all, I’ll try to convince you that having too many menu items in the top level is overwhelming and that you should try to limit that. It’s common for most UX web design experts to say there should be 5 to 7 items in a top level menu list maximum.

    But if you still want to make room for more menu items, you can do that with custom CSS. Here is a starter example to illustrate. It expands the main container widths and adjusts the spacing for some of the elements on the home page for Expound:

    #page {
    	width: 1120px;
    }

    .site-header .site-branding {
    	background-repeat: repeat-x;
    }

    .featured-content-secondary article {
    	margin-right: 45px;
    }

    .featured-content-secondary article:last-child {
    	margin-right: 0;
    }

    #primary {
    	width: 800px;
    }

    The numbers could be adjusted even more if needed. Also, it would be good to upload a new header image with the updated dimensions and use CSS to swap it out with the one you have now. In the example above, I just repeated the header image so there wouldn’t be extra white space around it.

    As for switching, I think you should stay, but I’m biased. :) If you have any questions about WordPress.com vs WordPress.org and the CSS editing differences or the pricing differences, let me know.

    The Custom Design upgrade costs $30 per year, but if you switch to a WordPress.org setup, they charge a base per month hosting fee that you aren’t charged at WordPress.com. Sometimes switching makes sense, but sometimes it doesn’t. the best thing to do is to state the end goal or main reason you have for moving and then weigh all the options.

    Another option could be to shorten some of the top level menu items. For example, instead of Transporte Marítimo, Transporte Aéreo, and Transporte Terrestre — perhaps shorten those to Marítimo, Aéreo, Terrestre.

    Thank you very much for your answer, you opened my eyes haha, the short items on the menu helps a lot to win space on it

    About the upgrade to wordpress.org I think that its necessary in my case, some companies are asking about put ad banners on it. Also, i want the possibility to make an account on the web, for premium visitors, adding a service for them. I cant to anything of this on wordpress.com .

    On the other hand, I dont know how much is the cost per month on wordpress.org but i thought that once you pay 100€ for the change of server and the domain, you dont have to pay much more… :/
    The info about the prices is not clear..

    Here’s a quick explanation about the differences in pricing between WordPress.com and WordPress.org:

    The pricing for WordPress.com is free for a basic site and there are no monthly hosting fees. However, there are upgrades which you can mix and match (or get in a bundle) to get the features you need. One example is the Custom Design upgrade which costs $30 per year. Another is the premium bundle that includes several features including a custom domain and costs $99 per year. All of the software updates are managed for you on WordPress.com, including security audits for selected plugins and themes (you can’t add your own, but you get a selection).

    The pricing for a WordPress.org setup is basically the cost of hosting and then you are on your own to install and manage the software. Some hosts include one free domain name with their hosting pricing, and some do not. Most hosts will charge extra fees to setup encryption (if you need that) and the pricing varies so you’ll need to check with the host to figure out what you need and find out if there would be any additional costs. Hosting + domain and SSL (if you need a secure site) are usually the main fees.

    If you wanted to add banners that are ads and charge for that, you would need to move to WordPress.org and you would also need to find a plugin that will do that for you (some plugins are free and some are charged for, that’s independent of hosting costs).

    Oh, and we have some recommended hosts listed at http://get.wp.com/hosting/ if you’re interested in checking those out.
