Increase in the amount of uncaught comment spam

  • Unknown's avatar

Over the last couple of months I’ve noticed a marked increase in the number of spam comments I get which are not being caught by the filtering system. They are all generally fake compliments with links back to a product website.

Is this a known issue that is being looked at?

Hi, unfortunately the spammers are always fighting to defeat our filters, and to some extent it’ll always be a game of whac-a-mole. We do still catch over 99.999% of it, but there are always a few that slip through, and sometimes more than others.

The best thing to do is just keep on marking the ones that get through as spam, since we constantly analyze those and use the data to improve our filters.

There are a few extra things you can do, though, like sending all comments to the moderation queue unless the user has a previously approved comment. More details and options are available at http://en.support.wordpress.com/unwanted-comments.

I hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any questions or if there’s anything else I can do.
    Ian
